    Powerful union demands ‘New Deal’ for the 2028 LA Olympic Games, threatens to strike

    August 25, 2025 // They're asking the International Olympic Committee and private Olympics organizer LA28 to give $5 billion to build housing in Los Angeles. They're also demanding a citywide moratorium on Airbnb, and want the International Olympic Committee to end its partnership with the short-term rental giant. Unite Here Local 11 announced the "New Deal for Our Future" campaign alongside other unions and community groups Thursday morning outside the Coliseum, which will co-host the Opening Ceremonies.

    March 30, 2024 // Rideshare apps are not too different. They generate revenue by taking a share of the total cost paid by riders to drivers. What is less clear is how large that fee is and how that fee has changed over time and across platforms. Rather than seeking out a rigid wage floor, a fee floor could stand in for the sense of fairness across platforms of different types. If workers on platforms are truly entrepreneurs, picking and choosing when, where, and how to allocate their labor across multiple platforms, doing more to ensure that markets offer a fair share of revenue can get the job done far more efficiently than attempting to mandate any particular amount.

    California Gov. Gavin Newsom to name former Kamala Harris advisor to Feinstein Senate seat

    October 2, 2023 // Butler's biography on the Emily's List says she currently lives in Maryland, but that line was deleted from the website Sunday evening within hours of the news of her appointment. Newsom's office told ABC News that Butler moved to the Washington D.C. area when she became president of EMILY's List in 2021 but she is a longtime resident and homeowner in California, and will re-register in the state before being sworn in.
