Sheriff Corpus denies retaliating against sergeant
July 17, 2025 // San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus denied Monday (July 14) that she suspended a sergeant because he provided evidence to outside investigators who concluded she was mishandling deputy misconduct complaints. But the sergeant’s union says it’s part of her pattern of retaliation. Sgt. Joe Fava was placed on administrative leave on July 7 for “matters of accountability,” according to a statement from Corpus, who is the subject of two efforts to remove her from office for misconduct. But Sergeants’ Union President Hector Acosta said Corpus only enforces accountability when it suits her narrative.
Former captain sues sheriff, saying he wouldn’t bow to corruption
February 9, 2025 // On Nov. 12, Philip was given orders to arrest the head of the deputies union, Carlos Tapia, who had been critical of Corpus. Instead of arresting Tapia, Philip quit, saying there was no “factual basis to warrant the arrest” alleging timecard fraud. District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe later threw out the Tapia’s case. Philip’s lawsuit says the arrest of Tapia followed a pattem of retaliation by Corpus and her former chief of staft and alleged boyfriend, Victor Aenile.
California: San Mateo County deputies union alleges retaliation behind leader’s felony arrest
November 15, 2024 // On Tuesday, the union along with the San Mateo County Organization of Sheriff’s Sergeants condemned Tapia’s arrest, saying it has “all the earmarks of whistleblower retaliation” in the wake of a report also released Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors compiled by a retired judge that investigated complaints by the union against civilian chief of staff Victor Aenlle.
