    Right to strike among teachers union priorities

In Malden, workers were asking for a contract that included higher pay, smaller class sizes and safer school environments, according to WCVB. “We had to take an illegal action because that illegal action is what was right,” she said. “The right to strike is a human right and the continued prohibition on the right to strike is a continued prohibition on every single blessed public sector worker’s right to free speech, we shouldn’t have less rights than any other worker in the Commonwealth.”

    Teachers strike in Haverhill, Massachusetts, enters third day despite court order

    October 19, 2022 // Such strikes are illegal in Massachusetts since state law prohibits strikes by public employees, which makes them exceptionally rare in the commonwealth. An Essex County Superior Court judge issued a temporary restraining order on Monday to stop Haverhill Education Association members from striking and reaffirmed that order on Tuesday. According to the court order, educators were to immediately return to work and the union was supposed to inform members of this obligation.
