    Hundreds of Connecticut group home workers strike over pension contributions

    September 30, 2025 // The workers, represented by the New England Health Care Employees Union, SEIU 1199NE, are demanding a 0.2% increase in monthly pension contributions to prevent deep cuts to their retirement income. The strike impacts employees at three agencies operating group homes and day programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities: Network Inc., Caring Community, and Alternative Services Inc.

    Butler workers march, urge Care New England CEO to settle contract

    June 4, 2025 // However, no progress was made and SEIU 1199NE claimed the hospital management’s latest offer provided “lower wages, higher health care costs, less on retirement and no movement on our workplace violence committee.” According to SEIU 1199NE, Butler Hospital told the workers it would not respond until sometime this week, despite the fact that the union members’ insurance benefits expired over the weekend. Nearly 800 workers began contract conversations with Butler and CNE in March, seeking competitive wages, paid training, stronger job safety protections, and improved benefits.

    Union to strike at group homes serving 1,500 disabled clients

    May 17, 2023 // The jobs involved include direct support and direct care staff, dietary workers, maintenance staff, program aides, job coaches, assistant managers, assistant program coordinators, residential day program workers, assistant teachers, behavior paraprofessionals and some licensed practical nurses. Baril and other union leaders have noted on several occasions that many 1199 members lost their lives, became ill or brought infections home to their families during the early stages of the coronavirus in 2020 and 2021 — all while caring for Connecticut’s elderly and disabled in nursing homes, group homes and through at-home care services.
