Denver Fire Fighters Local 858 Sues State Union to Affirm Disaffiliation, Stop $400K Dues Demand
August 11, 2026 // Denver Fire Fighters Local 858, the union representing more than 1,000 Denver firefighters and EMS personnel, has filed a lawsuit alleging the statewide firefighters’ union refuses to recognize its disaffiliation from the state union and is demanding roughly $400,000 for dues the local union says it doesn’t owe. Local 858 had been affiliated with the state union, Colorado Professional Fire Fighters (CPFF), since the local’s founding in 1946. But in recent years, some Denver firefighters began questioning whether the state union was providing enough value to justify sending it almost $250,000 a year in dues.

UFA, which represents 20,000 firefighters, endorsed Andrew Yang in the 2021 primary while current Mayor Eric Adams. had been previously received support from the UFOA — which has 7,500 members including lieutenants, captains, battalion chiefs, deputy chiefs, supervising fire marshals and medical officers.
Police unionization looms, accusations swirl in Key Colony Beach
August 11, 2023 // It’s been several months since the Key Colony Beach police force, a team of five, filed interest cards in early May to begin the process of unionizing. Public employees’ right to unionize is written into the Florida Constitution in its very first Article in Section 6. Since then, little has occurred to either accelerate or slow the process. However, Andrew M. Axelrad, General Counsel for the Dade County Police Benevolent Association (PBA), who is handling the union efforts, said by phone that the situation should be crystallizing soon.
