January 20, 2026 // Rady Children’s Hospital is challenging a vote to unionize by more than 1,500 frontline workers, including environmental services attendants, patient care assistants, patient access representatives, food service workers, medical interpreters, and medical assistants. The workers cited staffing shortages and working conditions they say affect patient care as the reasons behind the vote to unionize on Jan. 6.

January 7, 2026 // According to the NLRB, 1,110 ballots were cast, with 564 workers voting in favor and 546 against. The vote covers approximately 1,500 nonclinical workers, including environmental services attendants, patient care assistants, medical assistants, patient access representatives, food service workers and medical interpreters.
Rady Children’s Hospital nurses strike begins after union turns down deal
July 24, 2024 // The Rady Children's Hospital nurses started hitting the picket line Monday morning. The union representing the nurses recently turned down the hospital's offer of a 25% pay bump over the next three years. The executive director for UNOCH Teamsters Local 1699 says this is the first time they've ever gone on strike. On Sunday, both sides thought they had a deal and would avoid the strike, but late last night, union members voted the agreement down.
