    The Crucible workers are unionizing

    May 22, 2025 // O’Neill was also part of the safety committee, an elected faculty representative, and a lead organizer with the union. They had been raising the alarm about safety issues at The Crucible due to insufficient staffing. The Oaklandside reviewed numerous emails from employees sent to the board and Steward during the past few months that cited ongoing safety and staffing issues. “Over the past year, The Crucible has struggled against financial hardship, affecting faculty and staff,” a letter sent to the board and signed by 74 employees stated. “The financial peril we have navigated has resulted in extreme cuts to the overall budget, reductions to already slim staffing, materials ordering and scarcity of supplies, unsafe studio maintenance, lack of proper training, development opportunities, and more.”

    November 15, 2023 // Mr. Purciel sent a letter to AFSCME Council 57 exercising his constitutional right to leave the union. The union ignored him. Mr. Purciel also contacted the payroll officer for the County of El Dorado and requested that they stop making deductions from his lawfully earned wages and providing his money to the union. The government payroll department told Mr. Purciel that they would not end the deductions without the direction of the union. This is an unfortunate consequence of the statutory scheme operating under California Government Code Section 1157.12, which forces public employees to direct requests that “cancel or change deductions for employee organizations to the employee organization, rather than to the public employer.”

    Sonoma Valley Museum of Art employees union allege unlawful delay of arts program

    March 21, 2023 // The cultural workers union at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art has filed an unfair labor practice case alleging the museum has unlawfully delayed its Art Rewards the Students program with local Sonoma Valley schools. The delay to the program has reduced the number of classrooms participating and forced teaching artists to curtail their lesson plans amid a hastened spring schedule after museum leaders assigned classrooms nearly two months later than normal, according to museum employees.
