Collective bargaining agreement between Bath Iron Works and union employees to include 17% wage increase
August 24, 2026 // According to IAM Local S6, the new contract also increases shift premiums to $2.50 per hour, locks in healthcare costs during the contract, improves 401(k) contributions, adds safeguards for outsourcing, provides more flexibility for time off, protections with new technology including AI, and more protections for bargaining-unit work. The union says members had to make no concessions for the agreement. Bath Iron Works says that there is some training that will go into effect next week to implement the contract. Charles Krugh, President of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works saying in a statement “This historic contract is the result of constructive, good-faith negotiations. It not only provides significant wage increases, it also provides additional flexibility and long-term stability for both our employees and the company. It will help us continue the production momentum we have gained in our vital work of building ships for the U.S. Navy."
Navy shipbuilder Bath Iron Works reaches deal with union after weeklong strike
March 30, 2026 // “We look forward to working together once again to deliver the Navy’s ships on time to protect our nation and our families,” Bath Iron Works, known for the slogan “Bath built is best built,” said in a statement. The shipyard and the union negotiated for three weeks without resolving differences before the strike began last Monday, Bath Iron Works spokesperson David Hench said.
BIW union on strike after failed contract negotiations
March 24, 2026 // Six weeks ago, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited BIW, encouraging workers to build warships as fast as they can. Some of those workers are now on strike. Members of the Bath Marine Draftsmen Association voted on Sunday to reject the proposed “best and final offer” from General Dynamics and BIW. The strike of more than 600 workers would also extend beyond BIW to other General Dynamics locations across the world.
Labor unions call on Trump to boost US shipbuilding against increasing Chinese dominance
February 20, 2025 // Last year under President Joe Biden, the unions filed a petition seeking to address China’s shipbuilding under Section 301 of the 1974 U.S. Trade Act, hoping to start a process by which tariffs and other measures could be enacted. The letter notes China manufactured more than 1,000 ocean-going vessels in 2023, while the United States made fewer than 10 ships. It adds that the Chinese shipbuilding industry received more than $100 billion in government support from 2010 to 2018, such that Chinese shipyards accounted for the majority of worldwide orders last year.
Navy Shipbuilders’ Union Approves 3-Year Labor Pact at Bath Iron Works
August 21, 2023 // The contract, which takes effect Monday, raises pay a range of 2.6% to 9.6% in the first year with differences due to a mid-contract wage adjustment that already took effect for some workers, and will be followed by a 5% increase in the second year and 4% increase in the third. Workers are receiving an increase in contributions to their national pension plan while health insurance costs will grow. Machinists’ Union Local S6, which represents about 4,200 production workers, touted the biggest pay raises by percentage since the union's founding in the 1950s.
