NEIU, union reach tentative deal to avoid strike
April 26, 2023 // NEIU faculty is represented by the university professionals of Illinois Local 4100 — the same union that held strikes at Chicago State, Eastern Illinois, and Governors State universities earlier this month. All three of those strikes have been suspended as members vote on new contracts.
‘Many of us are struggling’: why US universities are facing a wave of strikes
April 24, 2023 // Thousands of workers at universities have gone on strike in 2023 amid new union contract negotiations in demand of pay increases that align with the effect high inflation rates have had on the cost of living. The strikes are a continuation of wave of industrial action in higher education in the US last year. In late 2022, 48,000 graduate workers and post-doctoral researchers went on strike throughout the University of California system, the largest strike in US higher education history. There were 15 academic strikes in the US in 2022, the highest number of strikes in academia in at least 20 years.
Chicago State faculty and staff start strike
April 3, 2023 // Weekend talks did not produce agreement, so about 160 members of Chicago State’s chapter of the University Professionals of Illinois are hitting the picket line. The union’s president said the administration has pushed them to this point as the lowest-paid among their peers in the state. CSU said the union’s financial demands far exceed the school’s economic position but they have reached agreement on workload, office hours and parental leave.
