    Southwest pilots union vote on potential strike underway

    May 2, 2023 // The strike voting period opened Monday at noon. The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association said they're still disagreeing with management on salary, benefits, retirement and other contract terms after years at the negotiating table. SWAPA President Casey Murray wrote in a statement the company's management has shown "no willingness" to address pilots' concerns related to scheduling and technology issues. “The decision to authorize a strike is not one we have taken lightly, but given the lack of accountability and dearth of leadership exhibited by our current executives, we felt that this was a last resort to try to force them to face the issues plaguing our passengers, our frontline employees, and our pilots,” Murray wrote in a statement.

We are asking to restore writer pay & conditions to reflect our value to this industry. The survival of our profession is at stake.” Some of the Board and Council’s demands include increased residuals for reuse markets, the reduction of “mini writers rooms” that greatly diminish the size of TV writing staffs, increased contributions to pension plans and health funds, and standardized compensation and residual terms for features released either theatrically or via streaming. In addition: enacted measures to combat discrimination and harassment and promote pay equity, and a strengthened regulation of options and exclusivity in television writer employment contracts.

    FedEx pilots union moves closer to strike authorization vote

    February 24, 2023 // The FedEx Express Master Executive Council of the Air Line Pilots Association, International last week unanimously approved the resolution. Negotiations between the pilots and FedEx have been ongoing since May 2021. Currently, no future talks are scheduled, according to the pilots union. “The decision to move closer to a strike authorization vote is the result of nearly six months of federally mediated negotiations that has led to our disappointment with FedEx management’s actions at the bargaining table,” said Capt. Chris Norman, FedEx Master Executive Council chair.

    February 22, 2023 // A statement by pilot leaders says FedEx customers should plan alternative means in the event of a pilot strike. Only a few items for negotiation remain, the statement says. The update comes a month after the Southwest Airlines pilots’ union called a vote to authorize a potential strike after souring contract negotiations. Delta Air Lines pilots also voted to authorize a potential strike in November.

    November 4, 2022 // The United Auto Workers 2865 announced today, Thursday, Nov. 3, that 98% of UAW-represented workers voted to authorize a multi-unit strike by UAW bargaining teams in their negotiations for living wages with the University of California. A strike could occur as early as Nov. 14, depending on the circumstances of negotiations. During this strike, academic workers would not perform their required duties and instead take part in picket lines across UC campuses.

    October 27, 2022 // Hundreds of student researchers, TAs, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students gathered to discuss issues regarding pay and working conditions. Multiple UAW groups were present at the meeting, including UAW 2865, UAW 5810 and SRU-UAW. The main proposals being presented by the UAW to the UCs are an increased minimum salary, free public transit passes, $2,000 a month in childcare reimbursements, year-long guaranteed job security, reimbursement of all visa fees for International Scholars, and accessible technology for disabled workers.
