Stellantis to lay off 400 workers at Detroit parts facility

November 11, 2024 // Stellantis added to its rising tally of layoffs on Friday, saying 400 workers at a Detroit automotive parts facility would indefinitely lose their jobs as the carmaker reduces costs in its struggling North American business. "As Stellantis navigates a transitional year, the focus is on realigning its U.S. operations to ensure a strong start to 2025," the company said in a statement.

UAW’s Fain says strike will cripple Stellantis

November 3, 2024 // Kevin Gotinsky, who heads the UAW’s Stellantis Department, described the Local 1166 vote as a low-turnout election, with about 61% voting in favor. He said the union is confident it can get “everybody moving together” going forward, with a more aligned approach over the next three months. More than a dozen locals have withdrawn grievances filed as part of the process, according to the company, but the union can refile them. UAW Stellantis Department Director Kevin Gotinsky speaks during a rally outside of the UAW Local 51 office in Detroit on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024, highlighting Stellantis' refusal to follow through on the $19 billion in product and investment commitments made during the 2023 Stand Up Strike. Strike authorization does not guarantee a strike will happen, but provides leverage for the union as it negotiates with the company, which says a strike under these circumstances would not be legal.

August 13, 2024 // According to the Associated Press, Stellantis may lay off as many as 2,450 of the 3,700 workers at its Warren automobile plant. The job cuts would be at the Stellantis Warren Truck Plant, which builds an older version of the Ram 1500 pickup called the Tradesman, sold mainly to commercial businesses. The company came out with a new version of the truck in 2018, and for the 2025 model year there's a new Tradesman.

Stellantis’ Plans To Build $25,000 EV In US Clash With UAW Demands

August 16, 2023 // On a livestream last week, Fain threw a copy of proposals from Stellantis into a trash can, saying the carmaker "spit in the face" of UAW members by seeking stricter attendance rules, reduced healthcare coverage, and other concessions. UAW's current four-year contracts with Stellantis, General Motors and Ford Motor Company expire September 14. There's no $25,000 EV available in the US at the moment, with the least costly option being the outgoing Chevrolet Bolt EV, priced at $27,495 including shipping. Stellantis plans to launch two affordable EVs in Europe priced around 25,000 euros (approximately $27,300). The Citroën e-C3 will arrive in early 2024, followed by a Fiat Panda-inspired model to be unveiled in July 2024.

UAW Skipping Ceremonial Handshake to Start Contract Talks

July 11, 2023 // “The members come first,” UAW President Shawn Fain said Monday in a statement. “I’ll shake hands with the CEOs when they come to the table with a deal that reflects the needs of the workers who make this industry run. When the 150,000 autoworkers at Ford, GM, and Stellantis receive the respect they are due for their sacrifice in generating the historic profits of the past decade, then we can proceed with a handshake.” Talks with Stellantis begin Thursday, followed by Ford on Friday and General Motors on July 18, according to the union. Change is in the wind The move to skip the handshake is completely inline with Fain’s militant approach, which is reminiscent of past tough talking UAW leaders like Stephen Yokich, Owen Bieber, Doug Fraser. However, recent union presidents have been less firebrand and more businessman.
