May 7, 2024 // Mechanics, parts department workers, and other auto service-related employees at Brown Motors, a Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep dealer, are seeking a vote to end Teamsters union officials’ ability to demand payment of dues or fees as a condition of employment. Joseph Illes, a mechanic at Brown Motors, submitted a “deauthorization petition” to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) with free legal aid from the National Right to Work Foundation.

However, under Beck decision, union officials can never require non-members to fund activities not directly related to union monopoly bargaining. Beck has been interpreted by the lower courts, and the NLRB, to require that union officials provide certain union financial disclosures to justify the amount they claim a worker can be required to pay. Sebuabe has yet to receive justifications for the amount he can legally be forced to pay by union officials.

The workers filed the deauthorization petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Region 18 with free legal representation from National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation staff attorneys.
