December 16, 2024 // Earlier this year, adjunct faculty at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and post-doctoral workers voted to unionize. In 2023, USC graduate students formed a union of about 3,400 people.
CALIFORNIA: SCA Adjunct Professors voted to unionize
March 6, 2024 // The Adjunct Faculty Alliance, or UAW, at the USC School of Cinematic Arts voted to unionize on Friday. 94% voted in favor of unionization. The results with be finalized this Friday, unless there are any objections.
Adjunct Professors Vote to Unionize at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts
February 28, 2024 // Two hundred and six workers voted to join the United Auto Workers union in the count, while 13 workers voted against unionizing. Out of around 281 eligible voters, 219 cast valid ballots, and there were 8 void ballots and 4 challenged ballots. The group includes instructors in departments spanning from production to screenwriting to interactive media and games, among others. The parties will have a week to file any objections, and if there are none, the results will be certified.
USC housing workers unionize in hopes of boosting pay, benefits
June 21, 2023 // Mike Long, a spokesman for SEIU Local 721, said the climate is good for union action. “You can’t ignore the regional context with the Hollywood writers out on strike,” he said. “And there has been a flurry of activity across Southern California with hotel workers.” More than 15,000 Southern California hotel workers voted earlier this month to authorize a strike as they bargain for a $5-an-hour pay hike, more affordable health care, a secure pension plan and “safe and humane” workloads. Unite Here Local 11, which represents the room attendants, cooks, dishwashers, front desk agents, servers and food service workers, said it would be “the largest hotel worker strike in modern U.S. history” and could happen as early as the July 4 weekend.
NLRB Sets Up Clash Over College Athlete Unionization, Employment
May 22, 2023 // The complaint alleged that USC’s media policies violated labor laws. The school’s handbook tells students to “smile” and “be positive” when being interviewed by the media. It also tells students not to “post anything that would embarrass USC, your team, or your family” on social media. The legal action, which has been in the works since December 2022, sets up a court battle over the status of student athletes this November. The moves also open the door to unionization and employment status for the college football and basketball players who create the biggest media draws for their conferences.
Bass campaign calls police union ad ‘defamatory,’ demands that TV stations stop airing it
