OHIO: STATE SEES 68 PERCENT BUMP IN OPT-OUTS

April 29, 2024 // The spike in opt-outs in March was led by Ohio Association of Public School Employees, Ohio Civil Service Employees Association and American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 8 members. All three of these unions saw more than 20 members choose to halt their dues deductions. The bump from 2023 was due entirely to the hard work of the Ohio’s outreach team, which sent out thousands of pieces of mail and emails to union members’ homes and inboxes.

The Buckeye Institute Wins Victory for Public Employees Against Government Unions

June 9, 2023 // The Buckeye Institute secured victories for five of its clients in Darling v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), with AFSCME and the Ohio Education Association acknowledging that money was illegally taken out of workers’ paychecks and given to government unions. “This is a significant victory for The Buckeye Institute’s clients and a vindication of their First Amendment rights,” said Jay R. Carson, senior litigator at The Buckeye Institute and the lead attorney representing the plaintiffs in this case. “In returning money that was illegally taken from Buckeye’s clients, the unions acknowledge that public employees have the right to quit government unions whenever they want and that when workers end their union membership, unions must immediately stop seizing workers’ wages.”

How to Make Official Time Even Worse

August 10, 2022 // AFSCME Council 8 had included in its contract with Cincinnati that the city would divert the equivalent of four hours of annual vacation time from all city workers and give it to the union. Those funds would compensate the city for the official time used by union members. This didn’t save taxpayers anything, since they were still ultimately paying for the official time. Rather, what it did was take even more money away from the workers, who were already paying regular union dues. Most Cincinnati city workers had no idea this was happening. The practice has been discontinued following a lawsuit by the Freedom Foundation, which argued that the arrangement violated the Supreme Court’s 2018 Janus ruling, which said that government workers’ pay could only be diverted to unions with the workers’ affirmative consent.

OHIO SUIT TARGETS UNIONS’ LATEST MONEY-MAKING SCHEME — SEIZING VACATION TIME

March 1, 2022 // Under the scheme, AFSCME confiscated four hours of vacation time from Lascano last year and is on track to seize another four in 2022. And while the amount deducted on behalf of one worker isn’t necessarily substantial, the suit is a class action, which means hundreds of others could subsequently join the lawsuit with Lascano — potentially costing the union hundreds of thousands of dollars in the long run.
