August 14, 2026 // United Food and Commercial Workers Local 27 President Jason Chorpenning previously said in a statement that the owners’ move to shutter Baby’s On Fire was “union-busting 101.” The owners also confirmed they were staying in Portugal to help “business lower its payroll and health insurance costs” following David being diagnosed with skin cancer. They also dismissed the idea of being “absentee owners” after the workers’ union said in a June letter they’ve been “stewards” for the cafe, as the owners have lived abroad.

July 13, 2026 // Baby's On Fire Cafe will close its doors soon, according to an Instagram post made Friday. Owners Shirlé Hale-Koslowski and David Koslowski cited "significant losses in revenue" as the reason for the closure of the Mount Vernon-based cafe and record store, with the last day of service set for Sunday, July 19.

If it had unionized, it would not be the first Tarlow spot to do so; She Wolf had also unionized about two years ago, after a brutal battle, which included a staffer drawing an antisemitic caricature of the owner in a workers’ zine.
Cheesman Park cafe closes abruptly amid staff unionization effort
October 14, 2025 // The Secret Garden Bar & Cafe closed abruptly during service on Friday morning after workers began petitioning passers-by about their efforts to form a union. City Street Investors opened Secret Garden a year ago, next to its company headquarters at the Tears–McFarlane House, 1290 Williams St., a historic mansion adjacent to Cheesman Park in Denver. But barista Tess Devillier told the Denver Post that the company grew frustrated by employee attempts to unionize earlier this year.
