The group represents roughly 95,000 state workers, which includes accountants, nurses and custodians. Fewer dues-paying members in their ranks means less sway at the bargaining table and with state leaders.

    California union demands 43% raises, rejects Gavin Newsom’s ‘pitiful’ contract offer

    February 6, 2023 // Although it’s rare for state employee unions to reject tentative agreements , the state scientists also rejected a proposed offer from the Brown administration in 2014. As members considered the most recent contract proposal, an anonymous website popped up criticizing California Gov. Gavin Newsom and telling members: “Reject the state’s pitiful offer. Vote no!” The union has argued its environmental scientists are grossly underpaid when compared with state engineers who do much of the same work but have benefited from larger pay increases. The scientists also have condemned leaders at the CalHR for including management and supervisor pay when calculating the average pay of workers in their unit.

    January 13, 2023 // High inflation would usually be a strong argument for raising pay. But budget deficits typically call for cuts in public spending, not increases. State employers face a tough decision. Some public employees are paid under the market rate for their roles and could leave for the private sector if raises are withheld. Public employee unions are also struggling with retention, which could worsen if a recession hits and older workers retire faster than departments can hire new ones.

    Mayor Bowser Signs Agreement with Unions that Represent More than 11,000 DC Government Employees

    March 14, 2022 // Mayor Bowser was joined by representatives for the Compensation Units 1 and 2 in signing a four-year collective bargaining agreement that serves more than 11,000 employees across District Government. Compensation Units 1 and 2 represent 20 local unions and seven labor organizations, supporting DC Government career service employees who make up professional technical, administrative, clerical, trade and craft employees, delivering some of the District’s most integral services.
