Labor strikes shut down operations at Canada’s container ports from East to West Coast, with U.S. trade left in limbo
November 5, 2024 // Ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert are at a standstill after ILWU Local 514 walked off the job in a strike. The labor action comes on the heels of a strike at the Port of Montreal. In July 2023, 13-day strikes at these two West Coast ports impacted the delivery of U.S.-bound goods for months, from apparel to auto parts and key industrial chemicals.
‘Scabby the Rat’ Was Spotted Outside NEA Headquarters
August 13, 2024 // “To best protect the interests of our members, the Association, and our staff, we have made the difficult decision to institute a protective lockout,” an NEA spokesperson reportedly stated at the time. Since then, locked-out union staff has protested outside of union headquarters on a regular basis.
Nurses who planned to strike for 2 days at Joliet hospital will be locked out for 4
August 21, 2023 // St. Joseph nurses will be locked out Tuesday through Saturday, during which time the nurses will hold a picket line. The hospital’s operator Ascension has not responded to a request for comment. A statement on its website explains that when hiring nurse replacements for the two-day strike, staffing agencies, by contract, require four days of work.
Twitter’s Workplace Practices Draw Fire as Janitors Picket and Musk Defends Bedrooms
December 7, 2022 // San Francisco’s Department of Building Inspection said Dec. 6 it was launching an investigation into reports that Twitter converted several of its office spaces into bedrooms. Meanwhile, janitors are picketing this week after the company terminated their contract. Janitors told a local NBC affiliate on Nov. 5 they found themselves locked out of the building, with no prior warning the company was terminating their contract. The workers, who are represented by the Service Employees International Union, plan to picket outside of Twitter’s headquarters until their contract ends Dec. 9.
Collins Aerospace workers locked out amidst contract negotiations
May 25, 2022 // Workers said they want the public to know they are not on strike. Employees did tell 59 News that Collins Aerospace is in negotiations with their union to work out a new contract. Until then, they will not receive health insurance or paychecks.
WTTW technicians on strike against Chicago public TV station vow ‘to be out here as long as it takes’
March 22, 2022 // Two dozen striking WTTW technicians came out from behind the cameras and held a union rally in front of the station’s North Side studios Monday seeking support in their quest for job guarantees and a new labor contract.
