    The Buckeye Institute Wins Settlement in Education Union Dues Case

    August 25, 2025 // The Buckeye Institute won another legal victory, this time for Beth Queen, a science teacher in Poland, Ohio, and Buckeye’s client in Queen v. NEA. Immediately after The Buckeye Institute filed the case, the Ohio Education Association agreed to settle the dispute to Ms. Queen’s satisfaction. “With this settlement, the OEA properly recognized Ms. Queen’s claims and avoided costly and protracted litigation for all involved,” said Jay R. Carson, senior litigator at The Buckeye Institute and an attorney representing Ms. Queen.

    Unions prepare to fight Ohio bill that bans university faculty from striking

    March 24, 2025 // The bill that would ban most mandatory diversity training in higher education is headed back to that chamber to approve changes the House made before passing it mostly along party lines. Republicans have said Senate Bill 1 would combat what they see as liberal indoctrination at public universities. But labor unions are ready to fight it. "This is really the the most significant undercutting of collective bargaining since that was attempted with Senate Bill 5 back in 2011," said Scott DiMauro, president of the Ohio Education Association, the state's largest teachers' union which represents K-12 teachers as well as some higher education faculty. Senate Bill 5 sought to restrict collective bargaining rights for 400,000 Ohioans in public sector unions, including teachers and law enforcement. Unions came out in force against it and then mounted a campaign to repeal the law, submitting a record 1.3 million signatures to put it on the fall 2011 ballot. Nearly two-thirds of voters approved overturning it.

    The Buckeye Institute Wins Victory for Public Employees Against Government Unions

    June 9, 2023 // The Buckeye Institute secured victories for five of its clients in Darling v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), with AFSCME and the Ohio Education Association acknowledging that money was illegally taken out of workers’ paychecks and given to government unions. “This is a significant victory for The Buckeye Institute’s clients and a vindication of their First Amendment rights,” said Jay R. Carson, senior litigator at The Buckeye Institute and the lead attorney representing the plaintiffs in this case. “In returning money that was illegally taken from Buckeye’s clients, the unions acknowledge that public employees have the right to quit government unions whenever they want and that when workers end their union membership, unions must immediately stop seizing workers’ wages.”

    Ohio teachers union against new bill that allows veterans to be teachers

    October 11, 2022 // Veterans would also have to have a letter from a former commanding officer that says the individual is qualified to teach; have earned a master training specialist certification; served as a training officer or lead instructor; served as a noncommissioned officer, warrant officer or senior enlisted person; or demonstrated a mastery of a subject area to be taught determined by the school board.
