Cal State University unions seek notice of federal subpoenas in antisemitism investigation
December 10, 2025 // The conflict between Cal State and the employee unions comes amid a sweeping campaign by the White House to crack down on colleges and universities that it accuses of fostering political views with which it disagrees, including protesting Israel’s military offensive in Gaza and supporting the rights of transgender students. The University of California system and the University of Pennsylvania are among the colleges facing EEOC investigations alleging a hostile work environment for Jewish employees. Cal State says it has not received a subpoena related to the systemwide EEOC investigation and that there have not been any findings, settlement discussions or other federal actions in regard to it. The EEOC did not respond to a request seeking comment.
Former Chattanooga police chief, unions strike deal over subpoena
January 30, 2025 // The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported in March that Murphy's Tennessee voter registration did not line up with a primary residence tax exemption she received in Fulton County, Georgia. Three months later, Murphy, 56, was indicted on charges including illegal voter registration, false entries on official registration or election documents, false entries in governmental records, forgery, perjury and official misconduct. As part of her criminal defense, Murphy issued the subpoenas to the unions.
Deputy union sues over investigation into Sheriff’s Department gangs, order to show tattoos
May 23, 2023 // The Sheriff’s Department has long faced allegations about secretive deputy groups running amok in certain stations and jails, controlling command staff and promoting a culture of violence. A Loyola Marymount University report released in 2021 identified 18 such groups that have existed over the last five decades, including the Executioners and the Banditos.
