New website empowers public employees to challenge corporate unions

The new website walks public service employees through three primary pathways to remove a poorly performing union: Decertification: With a majority vote of employees in a secret-ballot election, a union can be dissolved outright, allowing for direct employer relationships and greater flexibility. Forming an independent, local union: Independent unions are self-governing, provide employee control, lower dues, and can be formed by a core group of leaders. Disaffiliation: This process lets a local union sever ties with national affiliates, retaining its status and assets, but may face procedural challenges.
Walberg Presses Union Chapter on Hiring of Child Molester
September 23, 2025 // Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) sent a letter to the president of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 87, Olga Miranda, demanding information on its hiring practices after reports that the chapter employed convicted child molester Noelia Linares. SEIU’s website highlights that it is the second largest union of public service employees with more than 1 million local and state government workers, public school employees, bus drivers, and child care providers. This letter comes after the SEIU national office failed to provide an adequate response to a June letter demanding answers regarding both local and national procedures and policies for the union’s hiring of registered sex offenders. Instead, SEIU’s response left it to SEIU locals to defend their own actions.
South Hampton Roads mayors form regional coalition against collective bargaining
February 18, 2025 // Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer said he’s recruiting mayors in South Hampton Roads and plans to reach out to mayors on Peninsula to form a group and hold meetings “to fend off collective bargaining because of the incredible cost.” “They’re (state lawmakers) trying to impose collective bargaining on every city, and making sure the city has no choice,” said Dyer in an interview.
