Alton public works employees begin strike at midnight after talks stall
September 24, 2026 // A Thursday afternoon press release from the City of Alton outlines plans to navigate the strike while keeping emergency services and "other work the City deems essential to public health and safety" on track. Beth Bear, the Alton City Council coordinator, sent the press release. Alton says emergency work outside the city's agreements, threats to public health or safety, and emergency declarations will be upheld. The city also says repairs to traffic signs and signals resulting from accidents, emergency-related street cleanups, and road repairs addressing public safety hazards will not stop.
PECO union will strike on July 4, three months after contract expired
June 25, 2026 // As a result of this impending strike, roughly 1,600 PECO workers responsible for maintaining gas and electric systems are expected to step away from their positions. The Union says that PECO is not offering serious counterproposals to their proposals, despite the months-long negotiations. They also say that the members of the Union are paid 30% less than workers at other utilities.
Kaiser workers authorize strike as contracts are set to expire
October 2, 2025 // "The Alliance unions’ claims about Kaiser Permanente quality and staffing do not reflect the facts. Kaiser Permanente consistently meets or exceeds state-mandated nurse-to-patient ratios. In 2024, we hired over 6,300 employees—including 4,700 in care delivery and more than 1,600 in Alliance-represented roles. Our employees like their work and stay with us: Alliance employees have a turnover rate of just 8%, compared to the industry average of 20%, and typically stay with Kaiser Permanente for an average of 23 years at retirement.
Cummins workers in Oshkosh remain on strike after rejecting latest labor package via union vote
June 4, 2025 // Cummins workers in Oshkosh rejected the latest contract offer, extending their strike to more than three months. The main points of contention include the expired contract, temporary worker language and mandatory Saturdays. Negotiations between Cummins and UAW Local 291 are scheduled to resume at the end of June. The Oshkosh plant employs 129 workers, a small fraction of Cummins' global workforce of approximately 75,500.
