Ohio State hospital workers unionize, citing unsafe staff levels and low wages
January 17, 2024 // The patient care technicians join 4,000 registered nurses already unionized at the Wexner Medical Center after more than a year of organizing alongside the nurses’ union, which has repeatedly advocated on a public scale for better working conditions in the hospital system. Last November, the nurses’ union staked out an Ohio State board of trustees meeting to call on the university to address what they describe as unsafe staffing levels that lead to poor outcomes for patients and burnout for employees. In a statement, a Wexner Medical Center spokesperson emphasized the low number of votes in the union election — 185 eligible workers cast ballots, and 167 voted to unionize.

Union says it’s ready to continue negotiations as strike enters third day
February 27, 2023 // The union represents nearly 500 nurses, aides, respiratory therapists, housekeepers, cooks and other workers at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lanai Community Hospital, which are operated by Maui Health. Workers at the three facilities walked out Wednesday and began picketing after voting to reject Maui Health’s final offer. Maui Health has said that it has a contingency plan that includes staffing areas affected by the striking workers. “This staffing is provided through multiple sources with additional assistance available should the strike continue for an extended time,” the hospital operator said. Maui Health did not respond directly to questions of how many workers have been brought in during the strike and who is handling the striking workers’ roles. However, it emphasized again that it is working to make sure patient care continues.

Mount Sinai nurses deserve the best possible working environment, wages, and benefits, and we're tirelessly pursing these to all our employees' advantage." The statement added that the hospital system is "prepared for staffing changes, and we will do our best to ensure our patients' care is not disrupted and will do everything possible to minimize inconvenience to patients." The average salary for nurses in New York is $93,000, and $98,000 in NYC, nurses union and the GNYHA confirmed. However, there is a big disparity between nurse pay in private vs public hospitals, where salaries are almost $20,000 less.
Minnesota nurses union to vote on possible second strike
November 18, 2022 // On Thursday morning, the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) announced that members will vote to authorize another possible strike at more than a dozen hospitals in the Twin Cities and Twin Ports area. The union's 15,000 nurses will vote on Nov. 30 to authorize the strike at 15 hospitals. If the strike vote is approved by a two-thirds majority, union negotiation leaders will be authorized to call an unfair labor practice strike after giving a 10-day notice to hospital employees.
More than 1,000 doctors-in-training at Bronx hospital announce unionization
November 3, 2022 // A major unionization effort is underway among the 1,200 physician trainees at Montefiore Medical Center, who are raising concerns about staffing and other issues at the Bronx hospital. Resident physicians and fellows at Montefiore will announce their plans Tuesday to join the Committee of Interns and Residents of SEIU — a health care union that currently represents about 22,000 residents, interns and fellows across the country.
EMMC facilities workers vote against unionizing
October 31, 2022 // The failed effort to unionize EMMC facilities mechanics follows a handful of successful efforts to organize workers at other Maine hospitals in recent years. Nurses at Acadia Hospital, another Northern Light health center in Bangor, announced this week they had filed to unionize as Acadia Nurses United with the American Federation of Teachers. That bargaining unit, if approved, would represent more than 100 nurses. An election hearing is set for Nov. 10.
‘Understaffed and overworked’: Thousands of Minnesota nurses go on strike
September 14, 2022 // The walkout was expected to affect at least 13 hospitals around Minneapolis and neighboring St. Paul. Twin Cities Hospital Group, which oversees four hospitals where nurses are striking, said it had asked the nurses' union to join them in mediation. "A trained mediator can help parties focus on the key elements needed to move forward together. However, the nurses' union has rejected all our requests for mediation," the group said on its website.
