October 14, 2026 // Ultimately, Mamdani — a democratic socialist who has positioned himself as a friend of organized labor — came around to backing the bill because the latest version includes several new labor safeguards, according to the speaker’s office. Under the updated bill, which was shared with POLITICO, the city must create a workforce transition program under which carriage drivers would receive career counseling as well as referrals to employment opportunities in both public and private sectors, including with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, local sight-seeing bus companies and pedicab operators.
Layoffs, frustrated public among concerns for union president ahead of SEPTA cuts

It's going to be a frustrating time, and I'm worried that the backlash is going to come on my operators - and I'm not going to accept that," he said. Pollitt added that some union members are also concerned about potential layoffs. While workers with more than a year on the job are contractually protected, those with less than a year are not - a group he estimates includes more than 700 employees. However, SEPTA says there are no immediate plans for layoffs. "As we get started, there's no immediate plans for layoffs," said SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch.
VTA strike continues for 3rd week after union votes down latest proposal
March 25, 2025 // "By a vote of 188 yes, to 919 no," said ATU Local 265 president Raj Singh. The VTA's latest proposal offered an 11% pay increase over a three-year contract. But ATU leadership told us that the transit agency had added things into the contract involving attendance and overtime policies. Two issues the union thought had been previously resolved.
