    Unions urge US judge to block 1,300 State Department layoffs

    December 4, 2025 // The law, known as a continuing resolution, prohibits agencies from implementing layoffs through January 30. The Trump administration has told agencies that the law does not apply to job cuts that had been announced before the shutdown began on October 1, including the State Department layoffs that were first announced in July. The American Federation of Government Employees and American Foreign Service Association said in Wednesday's filing that the administration's interpretation of the law is wrong. They asked U.S. District Judge Susan Illston to issue a ruling by Friday morning blocking the layoffs pending further litigation.

Government lawyers said Trump determined that agencies with a primary national security focus are being hamstrung by restrictive terms of collective bargaining agreements that frustrate his ability to safeguard the interests of the American people.

    February 6, 2025 // Federal workers associations have filed suit asking a federal court to stop the Trump administration’s “effective dismantling” of the lead U.S. aid agency. The lawsuit by the American Foreign Service Association and the American Federation of Government Employees comes as the new Trump administration and ally Elon Musk are targeting the U.S. Agency for International Development for eradication, freezing its funds and placing almost all of its workers on leave or furlough.
