DHL Express workers extend picket lines across US

December 17, 2023 // The Teamsters represent more than 1,100 DHL employees who load and unload freighters at CVG, and 6,000 workers nationwide. Workers voted in April to join Teamsters Local 100 after a yearlong campaign and began collective bargaining for their first contract in July. They went on strike Dec. 7 after demands for better pay and safety conditions as well as an end to alleged union-busting activities were not met. The labor action comes at the busiest time of year for parcel carriers, who are in the final sprint of delivering online purchases and personal gift exchanges in time for the holidays. DHL brought in temporary workers and managers to pick up some of the labor slack in Cincinnati and diverted cargo jets to other gateways in its air network in an effort to maintain service schedules.

DHL’s Biggest US Air Hub Votes to Unionize

May 3, 2023 // The location of the unionization is significant because the airport in Erlanger, Ky. operates DHL’s only global air hub in the U.S. and its largest in North America. According to DHL, 80 percent of all shipments from the Americas flow through via the CVG hub, which handles 90 percent of the company’s U.S. volume. The company also has two more global hubs at Hong Kong International Airport and Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport. Negotiations will begin for a first Teamster contract for DHL-CVG workers after the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) certifies the election.

Workers try to unionize largest Amazon Air Hub in the world

December 7, 2022 // Ritze says an organizing committee of about 10 people is busy recruiting more people to learn about the union. "We're just really expanding that larger group around us right now ‒ across the different shifts and everything," he said. There are currently no national unions taking the local effort under their wing. The NLRB will conduct an election if at least 30% of workers sign cards or a petition saying they want a union. Then, if the majority of people vote in favor of a union, collective bargaining can begin. Alternatively, a workplace may voluntarily recognize a union.

Amazon air hub workers launch campaign to form union

November 23, 2022 // A group of workers who handle planes and packages at Amazon’s national air hub at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) are trying to unionize the facility, demanding $30 per hour in starting wages and other benefits. The organizing committee says it is looking to affiliate with one of the national unions trying to organize workers at the giant online retailer, which has a history of aggressively combating efforts to form unions at its fulfillment centers. The disgruntled airport workers are also calling for 180 hours of paid time off, without a cap on accrued time, union representation at disciplinary meetings and more flexible working conditions.
