September 11, 2025 // Here’s an interesting perspective from within the estimated 8,300 public comments that the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development uploaded last week, with regard to its proposed independent-contractor rule. Denise Lanza, co-chair of the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association Public Affairs Committee, filed a comment that explains how the rule-making would make it a challenge for the statewide parks and recreation community to hire people like youth league umpires and coaches, or yoga instructors for senior citizens at community centers.

August 28, 2024 // The group currently serves 61 students from elementary to high schools. Houts said the district has a shortage of interpreters and some students are going to classes without the services, which has become a legal issue. “So (we need) a contract that would increase wages and improve working conditions so those staffing ratios are not deficient,” she said. The goal for the group is to provide a better package so that interpreters can stay and serve students in the long term. Kelly Avants, Clovis Unified spokesperson, said not all interpreters work eight hours a day, but there is “a range of up to $78,000 for a full-time person near the top of the salary schedule.” The district also pays $15,055 per person per year for the health benefit plan and contributes nearly 27% of an employee’s retirement plan.
2024 strikes predicted to be less disruptive; but layoffs and unionization continue
January 5, 2024 // US workers will not be exerting the same sort of pay pressures on employers as they did in 2023, with opportunities to strike being much reduced. After a bumper 2023 of strike activity, it claims the bargaining schedule for 2024 does not appear to be facing as many battles ahead.

June 15, 2023 // On April 30, OEA’s board of directors discussed a so-called “progressive dues structure for BIPOC (black, indigenous and people of color) members,” according to meeting minutes. This scheme would include a “significant discount for educators until the racial breakdown of our membership aligns with the racial breakdown of our student population.”

MetroAccess union goes on strike
August 2, 2022 // A MetroAccess union strike on top of problems on the Red Line may complicate commutes in the D.C. region. Members at Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 that were employed by Transdev voted roughly four weeks ago to begin a strike at the Hubbard Road Garage. That particular location, the union said, has been over 100 workers short “for over a year and a half.” Brian Wivell, a spokesperson for Local 689, said that a mix of road supervisors, mechanics and other workers are expected to strike Monday morning with some expected impacts.
