Planned Parenthood Northern California workers move to unionize
January 25, 2024 // Planned Parenthood Northern California workers announced their unionization efforts today at all of the nonprofit’s 18 regional locations, including a San Francisco health center at 1522 Bush St. A “supermajority” of the organization’s hundreds of clinicians, nurses, social workers, administrative and support staff voiced their support for the forthcoming union, PPNorCal United, through union authorization cards, according to Service Employees International Union Local 1021, which PPNorCal United intends to join. Chelsea Fink, a communications specialist with SEIU 1021, said the union drive grew rapidly over the past two months, fueled by the short staffing and scheduling issues that have plagued Planned Parenthood since the Supreme Court ended federal protections for abortion rights in June 2022.
Allina healthcare workers unionize, forming possibly the largest private-sector union for clinicians
October 18, 2023 // Healthcare workers with the Allina Health System voted to unionize Friday in what is described as what is now the largest private-sector union for clinicians in the country. The union, represented by Doctors Council SEIU Local 10MD, includes about 550 physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who work at Allina clinics. The company is based in Minneapolis but has clinics all across Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Oregon: Providence nurses, clinicians issue strike notice
June 12, 2023 // The union's release states: "Nurses and clinicians are demanding Providence give them a fair contract that will recruit new nurses to the hospitals, retain the highly skilled and valuable caregivers who work at the hospitals and in patients' homes, set safe staffing standards, and ensure high-quality of care for all patients whether they be in the hospital or community care setting." Management shared the following statement with Becker's: "We firmly believe that strikes don't settle contracts, they delay them and keep our hard-working caregivers from getting the pay, benefits and contract enhancements they deserve. They also strain the healthcare delivery system in our communities, which can jeopardize vital care for those who rely on us.
