Minneapolis park workers strike prompts war of words and some cancellations
July 11, 2024 // “Threatening they would lose their jobs, threatening demotions or taking away seniority… and also telling them they would not be allowed to come back to work until the strike was resolved and the contract has been ratified which is illegal,” said AJ Lange with LIUNA 363. A spokesperson for the board shared information that was sent out to employees Monday afternoon. It said “The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board was made aware that striking Local 363 employees plan to return to work on Thursday, July 11. The MPRB will welcome all striking employees back on Thursday. No employee who went on strike will be turned away.”

Gannett journalists in the solar eclipse’s path go on strike
April 9, 2024 // Both Austin and Rochester are in the path of totality, and journalists at the two newsrooms say their outlets have devoted considerable resources to covering the eclipse. Democrat and Chronicle education reporter Justin Murphy said his newsroom has already published dozens of stories about the eclipse and has a “major” print issue planned for the event. “We see the eclipse as the exact sort of news event that demands experienced local reporters who know where to be, who know who to speak with, who know what to ask,” Murphy said. “We’ve put a huge amount of thought into where … all the different reporters are going to be set up to capture not only the eclipse itself, but all the different geographies and demographics of our community — the different experiences that people are going to be having.” But after the Newspaper Guild of Rochester failed to reach an agreement on a contract with Gannett Friday night, workers decided to launch an open-ended strike.

SF school staff union votes 99% to authorize strike
October 6, 2023 // The proposals on either side are still poles apart: The union is asking for a 16 percent raise backdated to 2020, saying its workers have gone four years without a pay increase; the union also wants one-time $3,000 bonuses and salary modifications. The school district has countered with raises of 6 percent, backdated to last year, 6 percent for this year, and 4 percent increases thereafter if certain budget conditions are agreed to by the union. SEIU declined to say how many workers participated in the vote, which took place over two days on Sep. 30 and Oct. 3, but Chelsea Fink, a union spokesperson, said the vote was 99.5 percent in favor.
Lee County teachers reach deal for pay raise, 11.5% increase for most senior instructors
October 3, 2023 // Think of the pay scale of a slinky. Right now, it’s squashed, or compressed, together. This means there’s not much room between the salaries of employees with little experience and those with many years of classroom experience. To fix this, the school district came to the table with $32 million in funding for pay raises. The hangup was figuring out how to spend it across the bands. A band is essentially a defined range of years of experience. There are more than 6,000 TALC employees in the district, and the total number of Lee County employees is approximately 10,000.
