Labor Watch: St. John’s Axes Unions, CSU Strike Pays Off
March 5, 2026 // St. John’s is the second institution to use a religious exemption to shutter its union this academic year; in the fall, the Loyola Marymount University Board of Trustees announced it would no longer recognize its non-tenure-track faculty union and cease bargaining.

February 16, 2026 // At dispute is an interpretation in the collectively bargained contract between the union and the CSU. The parties agreed that the salary increases were contingent on the state delivering funding through a five-year compact with the CSU, which included annual 5% increases. The state budget included a 3% reduction, about $144 million. It also included a one-time, $144 million, zero-interest loan that is to be paid back by July 1, 2026. The loan, according to the CSU, was offered to help bridge a temporary deferral of ongoing base funding until 2026–27. The union believes the CSU is fully funded, with the loan. The CSU believes that because the loan must be repaid, it cannot be used to support ongoing salary increases. It authorized the use of the loan for one-time payments to employees, subject to the collective bargaining process.
CSU uses loan to pay employees, sparking faculty and union protests
November 21, 2025 // CSU unionized faculty and staff assembled on Tuesday to demand the CSU use a $144 million state loan to meet their requests rather than distribute a one-time employee payment. The CSU announced in October that it would use the loan to compensate employees, sparking disagreement among faculty who want the loan to go toward programs, college budgets, raises and more.
Some of the 18 Teamster officials in the Western region charged by the Teamster Independent Investigations Officer (IIO) in May and July of 2023 have been suspended from office or resigned their positions, while others await the decision of Judge Barbara Jones. Judge Jones serves as the Teamster Independent Review Officer (IRO) and makes the final decisions on corruption charges filed by the IIO.
February 22, 2024 // Three officials who ran on the Vairma-Herrera Slate in the 2021 International Union election are among the charged officers. They are all charged for their role in aiding disgraced former IBT Vice President Rome Aloise to direct union business after he was suspended from the union for corruption and taking gifts from a major employer during bargaining.
California faculty at largest US university system launch strike for better pay
December 4, 2023 // The California State University chancellor's office says the pay increase the union is seeking would cost the system $380 million in new recurring spending. That would be $150 million more than increased funding for the system by the state for the 2023-24 year, the office said. Leora Freedman, the vice chancellor for human resources, said in a statement that the university system aims to pay its workers fairly and provide competitive benefits. “We recognize the need to increase compensation and are committed to doing so, but our financial commitments must be fiscally sustainable,” Freedman said.

CSU Teamsters will strike next week
November 8, 2023 // Teamsters Local 2010, which represents about 1,100 skilled trades workers for the California State University system, announced they will hold a strike on Nov. 14 across 22 campuses. Last month, nearly 95% of the union’s members voted for a strike. “After months of bad-faith bargaining, stalled negotiations, and clear violations of state law by the CSU, our members have had enough and are taking to the picket line to strike,” said Jason Rabinowitz, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 2010.
