Ford workers told their CEO ‘none of the young people want to work here.’ So Jim Farley took a page out of the founder’s playbook
July 1, 2025 // “The older workers who’d been at the company said, ‘None of the young people want to work here. Jim, you pay $17 an hour, and they are so stressed,’” Farley said. Farley learned some workers also held jobs at Amazon, where they worked for eight hours before clocking in to a seven-hour shift at Ford, sleeping for only three or four hours. As a result, the company made temporary workers into full-time employees, making them eligible for higher wages, profit-sharing checks, and better health care coverage. The transition was outlined in 2019 contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers (UAW), with temporary workers able to become full-time after two years of continuous employment at Ford.

About 90 UAW members are on strike in Oshkosh
March 21, 2025 // Compton said the biggest sticking points in the negotiations have centered around temporary workers and mandatory overtime on Saturdays. He said the plant does not currently employ temp workers, and the union would like to keep it that way. That’s because they want workers to be hired on by Cummins full-time, Compton said. Under the previous agreement, Compton said the workers are required to work up to 18 Saturdays each year or up to six Saturdays each quarter until they hit 18. He said the UAW is fighting to keep the cap on the number of Saturdays workers will be required to come into the plant.
‘We’re gonna fight for our members’: Unions respond to Oakland layoffs
February 3, 2025 // This week’s layoffs are the latest in several steps Oakland has already taken in an attempt to emerge from its financial crisis. The city has also slashed OPD overtime spending, temporarily closed fire stations, and cut the arts budget, while credit ratings agencies have put the city on notice that it faces a potential ratings downgrade. Layoffs were discussed last year and not unexpected, said Blue, but she assumed the city would give advance notice so unions could negotiate with management. City officials have previously said they’d do whatever they could to avoid axing front-line staff.

In late December, nearly 5,000 Providence healthcare professionals represented by the Oregon Nurses Association voted to approve a strike at all eight Providence hospitals to begin Jan. 10. The called strike came after several weeks of unsuccessful contract negotiations. The union claims the health care system fails to follow state staffing guidelines and doesn’t offer competitive wages and benefits. On Dec. 30, ONA gave the required 10-day notice to strike.

Union wants management off the GM assembly line or workers will strike
November 4, 2024 // “If I didn’t have to get national authorization, I would have struck on Oct. 2,” LeTourneau said. Two other GM plants – Bowling Green (Kentucky) GM that produces Corvettes and Tonawonda Engine in New York are also refusing to accept management on their lines. Both plants refused to “exploit temporary workers,” LeTourneau said. “If you’re not going to hire them, they’re not helping us.” The problem is that part-time temporary workers who work 32 hours a week can be strung along as temps “forever” because there’s no provision to hire them. They have to be temps for nine months in order to get hired, LeTourneau said.
Union autoworkers won big after striking. A year later, some face an uncertain future
September 15, 2024 // Now, workers are wondering how committed the trans-Atlantic automaker is to remain in the U.S. at all. For years, Cooper says, old-timers at his plant in Toledo have warned that if wages rose too much, the company would move jobs to Mexico. It's a threat he's always shrugged off, given how profitable the Jeep plant has been for Stellantis.
