Hotel workers strike at five Santa Monica properties after negotiations stall again

September 27, 2023 // Unite Here Local 11 — which represents thousands of cooks, housekeepers, dishwashers, servers, bellmen and front desk agents in Los Angeles and Orange counties — has been urging hotels to agree to sweeping wage increases given how deeply the housing crisis affects workers. The union last month urged convention organizers and visitors to “stay away from strike-ready hotels” that haven’t signed new contracts with more than 15,000 workers at some 60 properties. Unite Here Local 11’s key demand for months had been a $5 immediate hourly wage increase and a $3 boost each subsequent year of the three-year contract, for a total raise of $11. Southern California hotel workers have been on strike on and off since July 2.

Political scientists confront real world politics dealing with hotel workers strike

September 5, 2023 // Last week, Unite Here Local 11 broadened its call for solidarity by asking all conventions to stay away from Los Angeles until the hotels meet their demands. The union and the hotels are far from reaching an agreement. That means political scientists likely won't be the last group to navigate their Los Angeles events in the midst of major labor action.

Los Angeles: hotel workers’ strike ignites backlash among academics

August 18, 2023 // Leaders of the association’s Latino caucus said they were “withdrawing” from this year’s annual conference “in solidarity with the union and hotel workers”. About one in 15 of the association’s members identify as “Latino or Hispanic American”, whereas around two out of three identify as “non-Hispanic White or Euro-American”, according to membership data as of August 2022. “We continue to stand in solidarity with the heavily Latina and immigrant hotel workers of Los Angeles and southern California,” said a statement posted to Twitter, now called X. Others also flocked to the platform to express their frustration, saying the decision to keep the meeting in Los Angeles leaves members in the lurch. “Just the idea of trying to find someplace else is overwhelming,” said Lindsay Mayka, the chair of Latin American studies at Colby College, who is choosing to skip this year’s conference because the hotel she had originally booked is on strike and she does not support the event. “It’s kind of being presented as, you know, everyone has to do what’s right for themselves.” Maria Hernandez, a spokesperson for the union, told the Guardian it contacted “hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals” and confirmed the political science group was the largest it asked to cancel.

Hotel Workers Strike against Scab Staffing App and Anti-Black Racism

August 2, 2023 // Bradley said he’s been trying to get a permanent hotel job for more than a decade, and suggested that discrimination was the reason he was passed over. “I think I’ve proven myself, and it’s still not enough,” he said. UNITE HERE has negotiated contract language to push hotels to hire Black workers, starting in Local 1 in Chicago in 2006, with similar language in contracts in Boston and Los Angeles. “Often we’re put against each other, right?” said Briceño. “So through all these years that we’ve been bargaining, we take the opportunity to educate our top leaders, folks that come to the negotiation, to understand the need to speak with one voice for the workers and the inclusion of Black workers.”

Trader Joe’s staff walkout at Hadley store, local unions join in protest

July 3, 2023 // The union representing up to 15,000 workers employed at 65 major hotels in Los Angeles and Orange counties said that their members are on strike. The union promised whatever action they take would include a peaceful sit-in at Los Angeles International Airport. Contract agreements are unresolved with the remaining hotels, which include the Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott LA Live, the Beverly Hilton, Fairmont Miramar, Anaheim Hilton, and Four Seasons Regent Beverly Wilshire.

USC housing workers unionize in hopes of boosting pay, benefits

June 21, 2023 // Mike Long, a spokesman for SEIU Local 721, said the climate is good for union action. “You can’t ignore the regional context with the Hollywood writers out on strike,” he said. “And there has been a flurry of activity across Southern California with hotel workers.” More than 15,000 Southern California hotel workers voted earlier this month to authorize a strike as they bargain for a $5-an-hour pay hike, more affordable health care, a secure pension plan and “safe and humane” workloads. Unite Here Local 11, which represents the room attendants, cooks, dishwashers, front desk agents, servers and food service workers, said it would be “the largest hotel worker strike in modern U.S. history” and could happen as early as the July 4 weekend.

Hotel Workers Union Strike Vote Taken at the Pasadena Hilton Could Be Largest Such Strike in U.S. History

June 12, 2023 // The timing coincides with the Los Angeles area’s preparations to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics. Workers are demanding improved contracts in advance of these events, expected to bring a significant boost to the local hotel industry. Workers are seeking a $10-an-hour wage increase, affordable family healthcare, retirement pensions, and safer staffing levels. They are also protesting the industry’s decision to cut staff and increase workloads during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tourism workers seek $25 minimum wage before Olympics, World Cup in Los Angeles

June 5, 2023 // Curren Price, a Los Angeles City Council member, has proposed upping the hourly minimum wage for airport and hotel workers in the city to $25 an hour, then raising it $1 each year until 2028, bringing it to $30 an hour. He also proposed more affordable options for health care coverage. Representatives for airlines and hotels spoke against the proposed ordinance at the Economic Development Committee meeting. They said the ordinance would force them to raise prices and some small businesses would have to close, making L.A. a less attractive tourist destination.

Southern California hotel workers head for a strike authorization vote

May 31, 2023 // Union officials say they are asking for the strike authorization vote on June 8 to jump-start sluggish negotiations and convince hotel operators to seriously consider pay increases for their workers. Petersen said the union has plans to ramp up pressure on a number of other tourism companies — other hotels as well as food operators at airports, stadiums and resorts whose contracts are also set to expire June 30. He said in total more than 20,000 Southern California tourism workers covered by roughly 100 contracts will be involved in actions this summer. The union represents non-management hotel employees, including front desk clerks, housekeepers and hotel restaurant workers. Marriott International and Hilton Hotels & Resorts are among the major employers in talks with Unite Here Local 11.

April 19, 2023 // As Los Angeles prepares to host games for the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics, local airport and hospitality workers are pushing for an increase in wages. Union leaders and tourism workers - like LAX and hotel employees - gathered Wednesday morning outside L.A. City Hall to demand better wages. They want their minimum wage for to go from $16 an hour to $25 an hour. The rally came as L.A. City Councilman Curren Price introduced a motion that seeks to raise wages to $25 an hour for tourism workers, with plans to increase pay to $30 by 2028.
