    Opinion: NC teacher walkout is sacrificing students for left-wing politics

    April 27, 2026 // The N.C. Association of Educators has scheduled a mass walkout for May 1, urging teachers to leave school and rally in downtown Raleigh. School districts are already beginning to close in response, keeping children out of the classroom at a critical point before the end of the school year. Durham Public Schools shifted May 1 to a teacher workday after more than 600 teachers, about a quarter of its educators, requested leave. Asheville City Schools said it could not provide “adequate supervision of students” because so many staff planned to be out. Guilford, Chatham and Chapel Hill-Carrboro have made similar moves.

    BP to Begin Lockout of Union Workers at Indiana Refinery, Expects No Impact on Operations

    March 19, 2026 // The lockout as retail fuel prices have surged on uncertainty over the Middle East conflict. It's unlikely that the planned lockout will affect fuel supply given that BP has prepared for more than a year to take over refinery operations if it couldn't reach an agreement with it union workers. BP said negotiations with the local union have led to no progress on proposals it views as critical to the refinery's future. The company also cited a continued state of labor uncertainty, including possibility of a walkout after 24-hours' notice.

    Kaiser readies for pharmacy, lab worker strike as nurse walkout continues

    February 4, 2026 // Kaiser Permanente urged members on Tuesday to get laboratory tests done this week after unions representing pharmacy and lab workers filed to begin striking in Southern California on Monday and an ongoing strike by thousands of nurses and other health workers continued into a second week.

    Hearst Magazines Union stages walkout after WGA East contract expires

    February 3, 2026 // Members of the Writers Guild of America East at Hearst Magazines staged a half-day walkout Tuesday after negotiations with management failed to produce a second collective bargaining agreement before their contract expired. The action affects roughly 400 union members whose first contract expired Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026. Workers held walkouts and rallies at Hearst Tower in Manhattan as well as at Hearst offices in Los Angeles; Easton, Pennsylvania; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Birmingham, Alabama.

    UC Santa Barbara Service and Patient Care Workers Join Strike over Wages, Housing Inequality

    November 19, 2025 // The union — American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, which represents about 40,000 food service workers, custodians, hospital technicians, and patient care assistants across the UC system, including around 600 at UCSB — has been in contract negotiations with the university for 22 months. Members of the California Nurses Association who work at UC hospitals also went on strike in solidarity. The key issue: affordability. The union says average frontline workers, who make between $40,000–$60,000 a year, now earn 10 percent less in real wages than before the pandemic.
