Public Employees Rally Around Labor Reform in Pennsylvania
March 15, 2022 // The Pennsylvania House Labor and Industry Committee eventually passed four of the bills that were discussed by the committee that day. The bills would: Keep public employees’ personal information private; let employees see full contracts before they’re voted on; require employers to tell public employees they have the right to choose whether or not to join or pay a union; and stop public employers from using public funds to collect political donations for the unions.
Union President Flip-Flops as Political Winds Change
March 10, 2022 // Unions are deeply involved in politics and policymaking. At the highest levels, they behave like any other special interest group, funneling money from their members into political campaigns and lobbying government agencies. Even the CDC, which has a duty to advise the public based on science, instead took input from powerful teachers unions in crafting masking guidelines in 2021. Union officials have no compunction about admitting that they interfere in public health policy—Weingarten even claimed that she asked the CDC to change their guidelines this time around.
What Kids Have Learned from Teachers Unions
March 4, 2022 // If teachers unions really championed teachers and students, they would not have diminished the value of teachers by implying virtual school is the equivalent of a teacher in a classroom. So many parents and students have had to live in uncertainty the last two years, wondering if schools would be open or their children would be quarantined over and over again. What does that say about how much we as a society value schools and education? The unions had the opportunity to present teachers as essential workers who knew their job of educating young minds was of the upmost importance. Instead, they devalued public education in a way that will have lasting effects.

I am delighted that lawmakers are focusing on legislation that will help to protect public employees like me from union officials’ abuse of power. These bills would help hold unions accountable to their members and ensure our First Amendment rights are upheld.

PSEA: Where do your dues go?
January 10, 2022 // According to PSEA’s latest Department of Labor report on spending during the 2020-2021 school year, the PSEA put over $900,000 of dues money into an account that it calls the “Fund for Student Success.” While money from the account cannot be given directly to political candidates, the fund has no obvious connection to students or their success. In 2018, all of the funds in the account were given to PA Action Alliance, a political committee that donates to progressive Democratic campaign super PACs.
