Shasta County’s largest bargaining unit will be going on strike on Monday, following an impasse in negotiations with the county over a pay increase. The union represents over 800 county employees across every department.
May 1, 2023 // Shasta County supervisors approved the hiring of seven more employees to help with the county’s effort to hand-count ballots in future elections. The added cost for changing voting systems is expected to be in the millions, according to the elections department. County Public Information Officer David Maung said the increased spending on elections and refusing to reach a deal on employee pay raises aren't directly connected. “It’s obviously a financial decision because it’s coming from the general fund and that’s how we pay most of the employees at the county,” Maung said. “But the voting situation and the UPEC general negotiations are not related at all.”
LA City councilman introduces motion to raise wages to $25-an-hour for tourism workers
April 19, 2023 // As Los Angeles prepares to host games for the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics, local airport and hospitality workers are pushing for an increase in wages. Union leaders and tourism workers - like LAX and hotel employees - gathered Wednesday morning outside L.A. City Hall to demand better wages. They want their minimum wage for to go from $16 an hour to $25 an hour. The rally came as L.A. City Councilman Curren Price introduced a motion that seeks to raise wages to $25 an hour for tourism workers, with plans to increase pay to $30 by 2028.
Workers at RISD go on ‘unfair labor practice’ strike
March 24, 2023 // Marland said the agreement included RISD providing each worker with a retroactive payments back to last July. General Teamsters Local 251 had until March 1 to accept RISD’s offer. The school said the union sent a counter-proposal on March 18 that “included unreasonable demands related to benefits and excessive demands for compensation.”
Temple University graduate workers strike over ‘living wage’
February 6, 2023 // Following the lead of University of California graduate workers, teaching assistants and research assistants at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania went on strike Tuesday morning. The Temple University Graduate Student Association (TUGSA) announced on Twitter, “After bargaining for over a year, Temple still refuses to meet our demands of a living wage, dependent healthcare, longer leave, and better working conditions. We’re ready to bargain: is admin?”
Syracuse University grad students want to unionize to improve wages, working conditions
January 20, 2023 // SU plans to increase minimum stipends from $16,980 to $20,000 for master’s student workers and from $16,980 to $22,000 for doctoral students. The pay raises will begin in the 2023-2024 academic year. SU said it is also improving health insurance and child care subsidies for graduate student workers. SEIU already represents about 900 SU workers including custodians, housekeepers, maintenance and good service workers and library technicians.
