September 9, 2025 // Teamsters Local 320 started striking Monday at 10 p.m. on Morris and Crookston campuses, followed by Duluth and then Twin Cities at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

August 18, 2025 // If an agreement is not reached by Tuesday at midnight, a spokesperson for Teamsters Local 320 said workers could go on strike on Wednesday in Duluth and then on Monday in the Twin Cities, just in time for new students to move in on campus.

If workers walk off the job, enhanced strike benefits were approved by the union, including $1,000 a week, which reportedly exceeds the weekly pay of some workers across the university system.
University of Minnesota doctors file to unionize with country’s largest doctors’ union
March 26, 2025 // The union says physicians at the school are struggling with low wages and lack of staffing. "These and other issues compound the impact of an already highly stressful workplace and lead to rampant burnout — making it difficult for doctors to want to stay in Minnesota after they complete their training at UMN," the release said. The University of Minnesota Labor Rights Coalition helped physicians in their move to file.

May 9, 2024 // The union called for amnesty for all academic employees, students, student groups, faculty, and staff who face disciplinary actions, divestment, and disclosure of funding, and to allow researchers to opt out of funding tied to the war in Palestine and offer them alternatives so they can continue their work. In a post on Twitter, the union said, “On Friday, May 3rd, 2024, our union filed Unfair Labor Practice charges in response to UC’s actions against peaceful protesters – including UAW 4811 members – over the past week. It is important for Academic Employees to vote YES in the strike authorization vote to show the UC Administration that this unprecedented crackdown on free speech on University campuses is unacceptable.

It was once the third-largest — and arguably the most left-wing and democratic — member of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, with around a half-million members in core industries, until it fell victim to postwar anti-communist purges, raids from other unions and plant shutdowns. But the union revived itself by the 1990s. Famously, UE workers at the Republic Windows & Doors factory in Chicago occupied their plant in 2008, and today the union boasts a range of affiliated locals across sectors and industries from California to Vermont.
