2 rail unions vote to go on strike at CN if talks falter
March 8, 2023 // The vote on whether to go to strike was 98% of Local 100 members and 97% of Council 4000 members, according to a Sunday news release. Both sides are anticipated to head back to the bargaining table next week. Wages and benefits are one of the issues of contention. Although wages and benefits improved in the latest proposed agreement, the compensation falls under today’s inflationary rates, the union said in a previous statement.
A new try for unionization of legislative staff
December 14, 2022 // It’s fair to say that Democrats would not have attained their immense majorities in the California Legislature – more than 75% of its 120 members – were it not for money and other resources from the state’s labor unions. In return, Democratic legislators have bent over backwards to help unions increase their memberships and expand members’ wages and benefits. Notable examples are the famous – or infamous – Assembly Bill 5, which tightly restricted employers’ use of contract workers, this year’s bill to make it easier for the United Farm Workers Union to win representation elections, legislation making child care and home health care workers employees so that they could become union members, and innumerable measures essentially mandating union labor in public and private construction projects. Supermajority of TAM workers organize for union representation
November 15, 2022 // On Oct. 17, TAM’s board of trustees received the workers’ letter requesting union representation. In the letter that TAM Workers United sent to the board and leadership, they expressed that their “efforts have been undermined by un-livable wages, unsafe working conditions, no opportunity to provide input on policy, few avenues for review and advancement, a lack of accountability and transparency, as well as fear of retaliation when we raise concerns.” AM Workers United

October 12, 2022 // The Office of Financial Management rejected Mercier’s request for the opening offers. The contracts have not yet been approved by the Legislature, it said, so the agreements are tentative and anything leading up to them would be “exempt as part of the deliberative process” under the state Public Records Act. The problem with that reasoning is that the contract approval equals biennial budget approval, which isn’t going to happen for at least six months. The Legislature rarely rejects the negotiated contract and can’t even make changes, like shaving the raises by a fraction of a percentage point or reducing the bonus for getting a shot designed to keep workers from getting sick.
Starbucks illegally blocked raises for union workers, labor board says
August 30, 2022 // The NLRB is seeking back payments and benefits for baristas who have unionized in May and to require that interim CEO Howard Schultz read a statement to workers about their rights to organize. The coffee chain's blocking of incentives to union workers was meant to hinder efforts at organizing, alleges the NLRB, the federal agency in charge of enforcing U.S. labor laws.
Meow Wolf Denver workers form a local union, but they may face an uphill battle
July 8, 2022 // The Denver union, operating under the Communications Workers of America Local 7055, will ask ownership to recognize it promptly instead of pushing delays and expensive union-busting tactics, as it did in Santa Fe, according to a characterization by a union spokesman.
