    Maryland board rules state violated bargaining agreement with union

    July 6, 2026 // The Maryland Public Employee Relations Board said the Department of Budget and Management failed to bargain in good faith with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 3 when it denied access to information about telework eligibility. The board, in a ruling issued Wednesday afternoon, ordered the state to provide the requested information in 14-days. The decision marks another bump in what has been an uneven relationship between Democratic Gov. Wes Moore and the union that represents 50,000 workers statewide — more than half of those working in state government positions.

    Proposal to allow Frederick city employees to unionize tabled

    September 25, 2025 // Shortly before the Frederick City Council voted on Thursday to table an ordinance allowing employees to collectively bargain, Council Member Ben MacShane said, “It really feels like we don’t know what we’re talking about.” Council members spent a large portion of Thursday’s meeting discussing provisions like the number of unions allowed and whether the ordinance should stipulate the timeline of a unionization election.

    Union representing Maryland state employees opens ranks to supervisors

    Howard County public library employees vote to form union

    February 20, 2024 // The union will represent more than 200 Howard County public library employees across the system’s seven branches. Library employees formed the union so they could have a voice in the decision-making process, receive fair wages and have better job protection, reasonable schedules, adequate staffing, paths to promotion and a safe work environment, according to an AFSCME news release.
