UPS To Fire Employees Due To Less Package Volume; Say Layoffs Not Related To Unionization Attempts

January 4, 2024 // A UPS representative underlined the significance of aligning labor force size with package volume within the sector, taking into account the possible effects on workers and their families. Although the precise number of employees to be let go was not disclosed, the corporation did say that some would have the chance to move into different positions. There is little effect on drivers from this decision; instead, it mostly affects management, administrative staff, and part-time sorters. UPS made it clear that the current round of layoffs is not the consequence of unionization attempts, but rather is classified as “operational.”

Teamsters, DHL reach tentative agreement and end 12-day strike at CVG

December 21, 2023 // The agreement was announced Tuesday, just shy of two weeks after thousands of workers went on strike. Those in Teamsters Local 100 load and unload airplanes CVG, which is DHL's largest and busiest logistics hub in North America. Workers within the hub were demanding a fair contract that would cover 1,100 ramp and tug workers. The agreement reached will protect those ramp and tug workers, according to a press release from the Teamsters.

The company also has two more global hubs at Hong Kong International Airport and Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport. Negotiations will begin for a first Teamster contract for DHL-CVG workers after the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) certifies the election.

‘Inmates?’ DHL Express, Teamsters locked in struggle at CVG unionization drive

April 10, 2023 // Tensions are rising at the DHL Express global hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in Hebron as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters attempt to unionize 900 workers. Having invested more than $280 million at the airport since 2009, DHL operations have quickly grown, becoming an employer of more than 3,000 local workers. Strong growth amid a labor market shortage prompted the package carrier to raise hourly wages 15-18%, including a starting wage of $20 to $23 per hour for operations agents for different shifts. But the fast pace and working conditions have lead the Teamsters to seek a vote on unionizing. The drive comes as Amazon workers at CVG are also seeking to organize.
