May 22, 2025 // The VFX crews at Marvel and Disney filed for a unionization election with the National Labor Relations Board in August 2023. A supermajority of Marvel's more than 50-worker crew signed authorization cards saying they want to be represented by the IATSE, while a supermajority of the 18 in-house VFX crewmembers at Walt Disney Pictures signed cards.
Motion Capture Workers at ‘NBA 2K’ Studio Vote to Unionize With IATSE
November 30, 2024 // IATSE is positioning this organizing victory as the first successful unionization push at a motion capture studio in the video game industry. “This victory is not just about one studio; it’s about the future of work in the video game industry,” said the union’s international president Matthew Loeb in a statement. Loeb added that he believed the victory at 2K would “inspire others in the industry to follow suit.”
Commentary: The Media Are Doing Free PR for Big Labor
September 13, 2024 // According to a new report from the union watchdog Freedom Foundation (where I work), Big Labor’s return to the spotlight coincides with unionization efforts that have taken newsrooms by storm, securing one in six American journalists as dues-paying members. With journalists “more knowledgeable and sympathetic to labor issues” than ever before, recent union reporting insists that Big Labor is making a comeback; “that unions are good not only for individual workers but also for America itself”; and that legislation meant to ensure union accountability is a threat to democracy.
Hollywood union strikes deal for advertisers to replicate actors’ voices with AI
August 19, 2024 // Video game voice actors and motion-capture performers called a strike last month over failed labor contract negotiations focused on AI-related protections for workers. Legislation called the NO FAKES Act has been introduced in Congress and would give every person a right to their own voice and likeness, making AI copying without permission illegal. SAG-AFTRA, the Motion Picture Association, The Recording Academy and Disney (DIS.N), opens new tab support the bill. Proliferation of so-called deepfakes, which are highly realistic videos generated by AI trained on actual voices and images, and their role in manipulating public opinion have also raised alarm worldwide.
WNBA labor strike, alternate league will follow new media rights deal: Bill Simmons
July 29, 2024 // But the WNBA’s portion of that deal, with about $200 million per year — which translates to $2.2 billion out of a $77 billion pie for the NBA — already has some raising their eyebrows. The Ringer’s Bill Simmons is firmly among that crowd, speculating on his podcast that the massive disparity between valuation of the NBA and WNBA will eventually lead to a labor strike, and possibly a competing league forming. “It’s gonna lead to a labor strike is what’s gonna happen,” Simmons said after his guest, The Atlantic’s Derek Thompson, pointed out that average WNBA viewership is not far off NBA numbers — and in the case of games between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, eclipses it. “That’s where we’re headed in the next two years. The thing that I think is gonna happen is I think somebody is gonna try to form an alternate league. Cause it’s not like all of these WNBA players are tied to their teams forever.”

June 6, 2024 // Nearly 2,000 cast members have voted to unionize at Disneyland Resort in California, sparking concerns from the House of Mouse, so much so that the company is rumored to be looking into closing down experiences and attractions amidst the possibility of protests breaking out.
Disney Reacts to Mickey Mouse, Cinderella Unionization – What Happens Next?
April 22, 2024 // The move comes after the group announced a union organizing effort in February, a process that often faces challenges before reaching the stage of filing for a vote. However, on Wednesday, the union revealed that it had submitted cards signed by over two-thirds of the 1,700 employees, requesting the National Labor Relations Board to oversee an election. President of Equity, Kate Shindle, highlighted the historical context, noting that character performers at Disneyland Resort have remained non-unionized since the park’s inception in the 1950s. She emphasized the disparity as other workers in the park unionized over the years. The momentum for union organizing has surged, particularly following significant contract victories that resulted in substantial pay raises for union members, including those at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

George Clooney and Other A-Listers Reportedly Diving Into SAG-AFTRA Strike Talks
October 19, 2023 // On October 11, the AMPTP announced that it suspended conversations with the actors union, saying that “the gap between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is too great, and conversations are no longer moving us in a productive direction.” The studio pointed to SAG-AFTRA revenue share, which seeks to create a new pool of money for actors whose work appears on streaming services. The proposal, which the AMPTP found unreasonable, would charge streaming services a fixed amount per subscriber. That amount, the studios say, would result in the studios hemorrhaging over $800 million a year, which would create an “untenable economic burden.”
