    UAW locals get marching orders for strike against Big Three

    September 14, 2023 // At 10 p.m. on Thursday, UAW President Shawn Fain announced three locals were selected to start the strike at midnight. Those locals represent Ford Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Stellantis Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio and General Motors Wentzville Assembly Center in Missouri. For the first time in union history all three companies came to the UAW’s Solidarity House downtown Detroit, Fain said. All three automakers have made multiple counteroffers but none of been accepted. Fain says the companies were slow to come to the table at the beginning of negotiations.

    UPS Agrees to Ax Two-Tier Wage System in Win for Teamsters

    July 3, 2023 // United Parcel Service Inc. has agreed to end a dual wage system for delivery drivers in its next contract with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, dramatically lowering the chances of a nationwide strike when the current labor agreement expires at the end of July. The Teamsters announced the tentative pact on Twitter Saturday evening, adding they also persuaded UPS to end a mandatory overtime policy for unscheduled workdays and provide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a paid holiday

    December 29, 2022 // The contract covering 192 employees represented by Local 135 includes pay increases, $6,000 signing bonuses, improved bonuses and financial incentives for attendance, and voluntary overtime. Employees will start returning to work Jan. 3, 2023. They will get holiday pay for Christmas and New Year's Day.

    December 26, 2022 // The strike is still underway more than seven months later. In that time, many people locally and across the nation have been vocal in supporting the strikers. Politicians such as U.S. Senate candidate Tom Nelson during his campaign trail and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders visited with the Strikers to show their support. As of December, the strike has been going on for 7 months. Many of the younger strikers have either found other work while on the line or have left and never looked back altogether.

    December 7, 2022 // Ritze says an organizing committee of about 10 people is busy recruiting more people to learn about the union. "We're just really expanding that larger group around us right now ‒ across the different shifts and everything," he said. There are currently no national unions taking the local effort under their wing. The NLRB will conduct an election if at least 30% of workers sign cards or a petition saying they want a union. Then, if the majority of people vote in favor of a union, collective bargaining can begin. Alternatively, a workplace may voluntarily recognize a union.
