1 big thing: The big labor fight over automation is here

October 9, 2024 // Between the lines: The union also made sure that as the job of a dockworker changed, it was still a union job. That's an issue that striking autoworkers handled last year: Their tentative agreement included a provision that would ensure that workers who make electric vehicles see the same union protections as those making cars powered by combustion engines. Reality check: Not all unions are bargaining this hard. The deal struck by UPS and its workers last year didn't "adequately address automation,"

Port strike longshoremen union boss linked to murdered mobster in ‘farce’ racketeering case he beat at trial

October 8, 2024 // George Daggett, the attorney, said the case began after his cousin asked a Catholic priest for financial advice and had $18 million in union funds placed under the supervision of the same money manager who worked with Our Lady of the Lake Church in Sparta, New Jersey. "So at the trial, every time a mobster’s name was mentioned, the government had a big board, and they made a circle, [and] every time a mobster was mentioned, they put his picture up on this big board," he said. "The government’s case ended, and I took Father Cassidy’s picture and I put it in the middle of all those mobsters. So that's the kind of trial it was."

Michigan passes bills allowing home care workers to unionize

September 30, 2024 // “We know that more and more Michiganders are going to need care, that number is not going to go down, they should have access to adequate care and it’s about building a union but it’s also about making sure that every single person in the state of Michigan has the care they deserve and the care that they need,” said Menz. The bills are now waiting for Governor Gretchen Whitmer to officially sign them into law. Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt said in a statement sent to News 10: “These bills only further grow the size of the government while simultaneously shrinking the available resources meant to help those in need.”

Chicago election workers say board is blocking unionizing effort: ‘We have had enough of these games’

September 26, 2024 // The unionizing campaign began in July when 55 of the 80 potentially eligible workers signed union cards, Deming said. Since a petition to unionize was filed with the state’s labor board, SEIU alleges the city elections board has tied up the effort in court. Deming said the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners has filed six objections to the petition to organize. One objection is that unionizing would break an employee prohibition of political activity, which Deming said is not the case. SEIU does endorse political candidates, but no union dues are used to fund political activity, Deming said. SEIU 73 already represents employees of the Cook County Electoral Board, Deming said.

Marion County Public Defenders want pay bump in first contract after unionizing

September 6, 2024 // The office is understaffed, and low pay is one reason why. Employees say the shortage has led to unmanageable caseloads for public defenders and delays in the justice system for the individuals they're representing. The big picture: The public defenders voted to unionize last year, adding the office's approximately 230 non-management employees to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 481.

Labor Day: Workers on Their Jobs

August 28, 2024 // *Satisfaction with pay and benefits always trail satisfaction with workplace environments. Today, negative assessments of the economy as a whole may be depressing attitudes on some job characteristics. Still, in Gallup’s latest, only 13 percent were very dissatisfied with what they earned. *Employed Americans are reasonably confident of their own job security. Those numbers dipped to a low point in the Great Recession but have been more positive since.

Chef Ann Kim’s Korean American Restaurant Will Close Following Unionization

August 26, 2024 // Vestalia did not voluntarily recognize the union. Kim made her first public statement about the unionization push on June 9, writing on Instagram that she “firmly agree[s] that everyone deserves the right to a voice and a vote,” but that she felt Kim’s team could “come together” without a union. (The post has since been removed.) Later that month, food blogger Joe Rosenthal posted internal messages from Kim, her partner Conrad Leifur, and restaurant managers seemingly attempting to persuade staff to vote against unionizing.
