Amalgamated Sugar Union Workers may go on strike next week

August 3, 2023 // Employees are unhappy with new union contracts that would reportedly freeze pensions for newer employees, have employees go through a two-tier pay raise, and be able to move a person to any department in the factory. Employees are also unsatisfied with the unsanitary conditions, like using portapotties in 90+ degree weather, that haven’t been maintained.

Art museum and workers in dispute over scheduled pay raises

July 7, 2023 // The raises were part of the contract agreement that ended the 2022 strike. “It’s really a punch in the gut for a lot of folks,” said Adam Rizzo, president of the PMA union, an affiliate of AFSCME DC47. The disagreement involves a differing interpretation in contract language about longevity pay increase between the union and their managers, which became clear in a meeting between the parties on Wednesday, according to Rizzo.

Union Gets Big Pay Raise at Inefficient West Coast Ports

June 21, 2023 // The disruption tactics the ILWU has been using over the past few months to gain leverage in negotiations appear to have hurt its own members this year, with paid work hours down 25 percent through April 14 compared to the same period last year. That’s partly due to shippers choosing other ports and partly due to dockworkers working less on union orders. Common work actions include assigning fewer workers and slowing down the pace of work. The JOC said that cranes at the port of Seattle–Tacoma went from 25 container moves per hour to fewer than ten. As Peter Tirschwell argued on June 6 in the Wall Street Journal, by delaying negotiations for as long as it did, the ILWU might have missed an opportunity for a bigger pay raise. Ocean carriers earned extraordinary profits due to soaring container rates in 2021 and 2022, but those rates came back down to Earth at the end of last year and are largely back to normal now. And the constant uncertainty every time a West Coast contract expires contrasts with the relative ease with which the International Longshoremen’s Association, which represents East Coast dockworkers, has come to contract agreements for decades. The delay-and-prolong approach of the ILWU helps encourage shippers to go elsewhere, leaving less demand for longshore labor on the West Coast.

Terms regarding FedEx pilot strike detailed in tentative agreement between union and company

June 15, 2023 // Specifically, a 30 percent pay increase, a 30 percent increase to the pilots' legacy pension and a fully developed and "equally valuable company-funded" market based cash balance pension to provide a "durable" replacement for their legacy pension are part of the terms. ALPA said that to date, this is the largest investment in a pilot contract on a per capita bases and it "substantially raises the bar" when it comes to pilot retirement. “After careful consideration and thorough debate, our union leaders recognized the value this agreement will bring to our pilots and their families,” said MEC chair captain Chris Norman. “Now, we shift our focus to ensuring our pilots have the time and resources needed to make an informed decision.”

Shasta County’s largest bargaining unit will be going on strike on Monday, following an impasse in negotiations with the county over a pay increase. The union represents over 800 county employees across every department.

May 1, 2023 // Shasta County supervisors approved the hiring of seven more employees to help with the county’s effort to hand-count ballots in future elections. The added cost for changing voting systems is expected to be in the millions, according to the elections department. County Public Information Officer David Maung said the increased spending on elections and refusing to reach a deal on employee pay raises aren't directly connected. “It’s obviously a financial decision because it’s coming from the general fund and that’s how we pay most of the employees at the county,” Maung said. “But the voting situation and the UPEC general negotiations are not related at all.”

Oakland teachers union opens vote on strike authorization

April 25, 2023 // There is general agreement that teachers are not paid enough. But at the offices of parent advocacy group The Oakland REACH, founder Lakisha Young said while she supports better salaries for educators, it should not be at the expense of the students. "Now we're being asked to sign on to an action that is disruptive to our children, just in support of teachers. And it's like, no, we can support teachers and not support a teacher strike," said Young. "It's what's been put on the table and maybe we need to create a new playbook behind this. Because this has become excessive." Another REACH member, Lupe Canchola, said, like a lot of parents, she will be hard-pressed to find a place for her child if the schools close. She said, in the past, she always supported the teachers' work actions.

Texas State employee union rallies for raises, cost-of-living adjustments

April 20, 2023 // Texas House Rep. John Bucy, D-Cedar Park, also spoke at the rally. “I’m proud to be a union member. I’m proud to stand alongside each and every one of you,” Bucy said. “Time after time after time, y’all have put in more work than you need to because you want to serve this state. But this building has failed you.” Bucy said he wants to see House Bills 202 (pay raise for state employees) and 3761 (cost-of-living adjustment for benefits from the Employees Retirement System of Texas) passed.

Rutgers faculty authorizes a strike as negotiations continue

March 15, 2023 // Members of Rutgers AAUP-AFT and Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union voted Friday to authorize a strike following a 10-day vote. Rutgers AAUP-AFT represents full-time faculty, graduate workers, postdoctoral associates, and counselors, while the Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union represents part-time lecturers. A strike authorization does not mean that the educators will walk from the classroom. While students are on spring break this week, the two sides will be at the negotiating table. If the educators strike, it would affect all three campuses – Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick – and be the first faculty strike in the school’s 256-year history.
