April 22, 2025 // Groups opposed to the new law say they've gathered over 320,000 signatures to put it up for a referendum on next year's ballot. As of Friday, at least 33,000 of the signatures have been verified toward the qualifying requirement of about 141,000 signatures, which also includes a certain number of signatures in 15 of the state's 29 Senate districts.
VTA Slightly Boosts Raise Offer, Union Says It Falls Far Short
March 24, 2025 // The more than 1,500 transit workers were originally slated to vote on the VTA’s previous offer — 10.5% raises over three years — on Sunday, but Singh said the agency asked them to hold off after it decided to hold the special meeting. He criticized the fairness of wages at VTA, saying supervisors and upper management are “essentially making double what our employees are making.” But VTA officials said their latest offer could cause financial pain for the agency.
Detroit refinery union workers, Marathon Petroleum reach 7-year agreement, ending 3-month strike
December 17, 2024 // DETROIT: Contract talks started in December 2023. Around 270 union members went on strike on Sept. 4. It was the first time in 30 years that workers with Local 283 had gone on strike. The Detroit facility refines 140,000 barrels of oil per day.
After two years without a contract, unionized Chipotle workers call for nationwide boycott
December 5, 2024 // In August, the National Labor Relations Board found that Chipotle violated labor law for allegedly telling employees it couldn’t provide raises because they were unionized. Chipotle does tend to pay its workers above minimum wage. Anisa Smith was hired in October for $13.25 an hour — almost $3 more than Michigan’s minimum wage. She said she agreed with her manager that she could work Monday through Thursday while her daughter is at school.
Machinists’ strike could cost Boeing $1 billion a month, estimate suggests
October 10, 2024 // Right now, Boeing is graded a BBB- on the S&P scale, meaning the company has "adequate capacity to meet financial commitments," but is "more subject to adverse economic conditions." With the strike nearing the end of its first month with no end in sight, the financial analysis company could downgrade the aerospace manufacturer to a BB rating, meaning it faces "major ongoing uncertainties to adverse business, financial and economic conditions." This would drop the company below an investment-grade rating. In a statement sent Tuesday night, Boeing COO Stephanie Pope said the strike has "deeply affected our business, our customers and our communities," but said the company remains committed to reaching an agreement with machinists that "recognizes our employees and preserves our company's future." Pope alleged that during the latest negotiations the union made demands "far in excess of what can be accepted if we are to remain competitive."
Textron Aviation workers go on strike after rejecting company’s offer
September 24, 2024 // If the strikes continue over a month, issues could form in the supply chains. Other workers who talked to KSN on Monday after the strike began say the negotiations were helpful but did not go far enough. “The negotiations got pretty far, said Troy Greene, who is also a shop steward. “There were some things in the deal that were pretty good. But we decided to hold out and get what we think we deserve.”

I do see a place for unions if they embrace a voluntary business model and become like professional service organizations. Unfortunately, they're not there. If you're under a union contract, you're stuck with the wages, the benefits, the vacations, [and] the hours they negotiate for you. It's actually impossible for the employer to unilaterally say, “you're doing a great job, I'm going to give you a raise,” or “I'm going to give you a bonus,” or, “hey, you want more vacation for a little less money?”
Marion County Public Defenders want pay bump in first contract after unionizing
September 6, 2024 // The office is understaffed, and low pay is one reason why. Employees say the shortage has led to unmanageable caseloads for public defenders and delays in the justice system for the individuals they're representing. The big picture: The public defenders voted to unionize last year, adding the office's approximately 230 non-management employees to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 481.
Minneapolis park workers strike prompts war of words and some cancellations
July 11, 2024 // “Threatening they would lose their jobs, threatening demotions or taking away seniority… and also telling them they would not be allowed to come back to work until the strike was resolved and the contract has been ratified which is illegal,” said AJ Lange with LIUNA 363. A spokesperson for the board shared information that was sent out to employees Monday afternoon. It said “The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board was made aware that striking Local 363 employees plan to return to work on Thursday, July 11. The MPRB will welcome all striking employees back on Thursday. No employee who went on strike will be turned away.”
Flight attendant union rejects American Airlines’ proposed 17% pay raise
June 7, 2024 // CEO Robert Isom offered flight attendants immediate 17% wage increases earlier Wednesday as contract talks continue without a deal, bringing the prospect of a strike closer. The airline and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants have struggled to reach a new contract agreement, differing on major issues, such as pay. Flight attendants haven’t received contract raises since before the pandemic.
