Workers vote to remove union at Capitol Hill’s Glo’s Diner

November 6, 2023 // The decertification process, according to the National Labor Relations Board, is straightforward. “Employees may file a petition for decertification (RD) if they believe support for a union has diminished, after collecting signatures from at least 30% of workers in a unit,” the documentation reads. “A majority of votes decides the outcome.” The Glo’s decision is, meanwhile, a significant blow to the nascent efforts of Restaurant Workers United which has reported only a handful of members in recent annual reports as other efforts like increasing union representation at big chain Starbucks have grown. Ben Reynolds, a representative for the RWU group, declined to comment on the vote at this time citing solidarity with the Glo’s workers who are “taking a minute to recover emotionally from the strain of this election.” CHS will update our reporting when we hear back.

Unions seek gains in hostile territory: ‘If you change the South, you change America’

September 15, 2023 // The Union of Southern Service Workers, an SEIU-backed group, is organizing low-wage workers from across the service industry. The National Domestic Workers Alliance, a non-union membership organization, is mapping blue-leaning Southern jurisdictions, such as Miami-Dade County, that could be open to enacting a floor of labor standards for homecare. That effort has already led to the passage of “Bill of Rights” legislation in 10 states and four cities. And the Southern Workers Assembly, an advocacy group for both union and non-union workers, is trying to educate and organize workplaces across the region.

The business of tipping: experts, unions and tip workers weigh in on gratuity in 2023

August 23, 2023 // “Eight years ago when I was hired, the tipping was okay,” he said. “But now it’s going down. [Back then] our major income was calling taxis , so people gave you two, three dollars here and there. Now, a lot of people use rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft. So they don’t need our help. The other thing is, with the digital age, a lot of people want to give you something, but they don’t even have cash. Because of these reasons, we are affected.” Tips cover most of his and his coworkers’ expenses, said Tadege. With a lack of tips, most work multiple jobs to fill the gap in their income.
