NYC lifeguard union boss retires ahead of disciplinary trial

January 30, 2025 // Peter Stein, who was the longtime head of the lifeguards supervisors union, will face a virtual disciplinary trial Thursday with representatives from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The proceeding is not open to the public. An attorney involved in the case and a lifeguard who has long pushed for reform of the union described the allegations to Gothamist. The hearing, they said, centers on charges Stein failed to abide by union bylaws and obstructed lifeguards from participating in union activities.

COMMENTARY Chicago Teachers Union: An Example in Corruption

May 29, 2024 // The scandals didn’t end in 2023, regrettably. An ethics complaint filed in 2024 over a “leaked email detailing a plan to help students vote” violated the CPS Code of Ethics, according to the Illinois Policy Institute, which filed the complaint. To be fair, CPS officials aren’t barred from engaging in some political activities. They cannot, however, conduct such activities during working hours. The Illinois Policy Institute claims the email shows “the union is asking its members to violate the CPS Code of Ethics and possibly other state or city provisions.” In fact, while writing this article, another shocking revelation came out about the Chicago Public Schools system. A former student is suing the CPS, alleging that a dean there raped her at the age of 15 and then posed as her stepfather to get her two abortions, and the staff failed to report it. I need to stop writing before another scandal comes out, or I’ll have to add that, too.

Per Alaska State Statute, both second- and fourth-degree charges of sexual abuse of a minor describe crimes committed by an adult against someone who is 16 or 17 years old while the perpetrator is at least three years older than the victim and occupying a position of authority over them. The charges describe sexual penetration and sexual contact, respectively.

Southern California hotel workers head for a strike authorization vote

May 31, 2023 // Union officials say they are asking for the strike authorization vote on June 8 to jump-start sluggish negotiations and convince hotel operators to seriously consider pay increases for their workers. Petersen said the union has plans to ramp up pressure on a number of other tourism companies — other hotels as well as food operators at airports, stadiums and resorts whose contracts are also set to expire June 30. He said in total more than 20,000 Southern California tourism workers covered by roughly 100 contracts will be involved in actions this summer. The union represents non-management hotel employees, including front desk clerks, housekeepers and hotel restaurant workers. Marriott International and Hilton Hotels & Resorts are among the major employers in talks with Unite Here Local 11.

Biden Labor Secretary Covered for Police Union That Enabled a Convicted Child Rapist

May 9, 2022 // The Monday conviction of Patrick Rose on 21 counts related to sexual assault of minors puts the spotlight on Walsh, who as Boston's mayor blocked records showing the city's police department knew about Rose's sexual crimes for decades. The records, which were released by Walsh's successor, are damaging to the city's powerful police union, which was led by the now-convicted child rapist during Walsh's tenure as mayor.
