    Why the protests at American Dream? Workers try to unionize, clash with employers

    September 19, 2024 // They’re cleaning staff trying to organize and join part of the union 32BJ Service Employees International Union, and they’ve been protesting the treatment of several of their fellow workers at American Dream. Among their grievances, 32BJ alleged that two people working at the mall as cleaning staff — Jose Terán and Luis Verela — were fired because of their union organizing efforts by HSA Cleaning, a company the mall contracted for cleaning services.

    Union representing providers at DC’s Unity Health Care authorizes strike

    September 9, 2024 // Emily Zucker, a family medicine physician at Unity Health Care, told WTOP in an interview that “at least 30 providers have quit this year alone,” adding that extra pressure is put on doctors who are expected to see 24 patients a day in visits that are scheduled for 20 minutes each. Zucker described the average patient at Unity as among the most vulnerable populations in the District. They have what she calls “lower health literacy and lots of complicated medical problems. So, a standard 20-minute visit is really not doing them justice for the health care that they need.”

    Union Workers at Boeing Could Be Preparing to Strike

    September 3, 2024 // The contract that Boeing has with about 32,000 union workers expires on Thursday, September 12th. A union leader stated that Boeing and it’s workers disagree on several issues including wages, health care, retirement, and time off. Boeing stated that it will continue to bargain with the union in good faith, and that they’re confident that a deal can be reached.

    New UCSD Report Shows Younger Workers Are Supportive of Unions

    August 28, 2024 // Younger workers are far more likely to support but also be uncertain about unions, according to a report released today by UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy. The report, published by the Economics Policy Institute, identifies three major shifts occurring among U.S. workers: a recent, marked decline in opposition to labor unions, a rise of workers who are interested in — but unsure about — unions and an emerging generation gap in attitudes toward unionization.

    Chef Ann Kim’s Korean American Restaurant Will Close Following Unionization

    August 26, 2024 // Vestalia did not voluntarily recognize the union. Kim made her first public statement about the unionization push on June 9, writing on Instagram that she “firmly agree[s] that everyone deserves the right to a voice and a vote,” but that she felt Kim’s team could “come together” without a union. (The post has since been removed.) Later that month, food blogger Joe Rosenthal posted internal messages from Kim, her partner Conrad Leifur, and restaurant managers seemingly attempting to persuade staff to vote against unionizing.

    State Offers Taxpayer-Funded Health Coverage to Unionized Home Care Workers

    July 16, 2024 // In a new subsidy for the health-care union 1199 SEIU, the Hochul administration is allowing the union’s benefit fund for home care aides to shift some members into taxpayer-funded health coverage through the Essential Plan. The arrangement appears to sidestep the Essential Plan’s eligibility rules, which normally exclude people with access to employer-sponsored health benefits. The deal gives a further boost to the 1199 SEIU National Benefit Fund for Home Care Employees,

    June 30, 2024 // But Rudy Sanetta, a maintenance worker at US Steel, prefers Trump on the economy and because of his stance on gun rights. "I like him for his resistance to the politicians," Sanetta said of Trump. "The other guy, I have no confidence." Working class voters "are the most pivotal because they're the ones who have actually demonstrated that they're willing to select either Trump or Biden," said Jonathan Cervas, a political scientist at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

    Pennsylvania Officials Charge Two in Scheme to Divert Union Funds

    May 15, 2024 // Woods, 39, who held a position as an executive officer within District 1199C of the National Union of Hospital and Healthcare Employees, is accused of approving union payments to Hardy’s unlicensed construction company under false pretenses. According to the investigation conducted by the Office of Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the duo misled the union’s executive board with fabricated bids from other companies to inflate the price paid for bar renovations at the union’s premises. Subsequently, a significant portion of these payments were funneled to Hardy’s political consulting firm, purportedly to support political activities ahead of the 2019 Democratic Primary election. The grand jury’s investigation led to recommendations for charges against both men, including participation in corrupt organizations, theft, and forgery. Hardy, 51, alongside Woods, faces accusations of circumventing Pennsylvania campaign finance laws and federal union reporting regulations.

    Aramark workers at Wells Fargo Center announce strike for 1st home game of Sixers-Knicks playoff series

    April 22, 2024 // On Thursday, the Philadelphia City Council passed a resolution to support food service employees in their contract negotiations. The document "urges Aramark to negotiate fair and equitable contracts that provide these workers with a standard minimum wage and healthcare coverage." At Thursday's City Council meeting, union members announced another strike for Thursday, April 25 -- Game 3 of the Sixers-Knicks playoff series and the first time the Sixers will be at home in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
