    November 26, 2024 // In a significant escalation of the Culinary Union's first open-ended strike in 22 years, 57 union members and striking workers from Virgin Las Vegas were arrested yesterday during a peaceful act of civil disobedience. The demonstration, which drew hundreds of participants, has maintained continuous picket lines at every entrance and exit along Harmon Avenue and Paradise Road since the strike began on November 15, 2024.

    November 18, 2024 // After the breakthrough deals last November, the Culinary Union quickly reached similar agreements for the rest of its members at major hotel-casinos on the Strip, downtown and at off-Strip properties — with the exception of Virgin Hotels. The contracts on the Strip alone cover more than 40,000 workers. While the union pays striking workers $500 per week for picketing shifts for at least five days, union members at the picket line on Friday said that they were expecting financial pain while being out of work.

    Dozens of striking S.F. hotel workers arrested during march over labor dispute

    November 3, 2024 // Dozens of striking San Francisco hotel workers were arrested on Wednesday as hundreds marched in protest amid a monthslong contract dispute. The union workers prompted arrest after sitting in the middle of Powell Street next to Union Square just after 5 p.m., at the end of a march that started next to the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, the city’s largest hotel. Workers wore red T-shirts that read “One Job Should Be Enough” and carried blue-and-yellow signs that said “Bet on SF” as they circled the Hilton. They chanted, “No contract, no peace,” and blasted air horns. Outside the Grand Hyatt, members slammed on drums made out of barrels.

    September 26, 2024 // Around 2,000 hotel workers went on strike Tuesday at the world’s largest Hilton hotel and the biggest hotel in Hawaii Unionized workers at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort — the largest Hilton in the world — began an open-ended strike at 5 a.m. They are calling for conditions including higher wages, more manageable workloads and a reversal of cuts implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic such as limited daily room cleaning.

    August 25, 2024 // Hotel workers’ union UNITE HERE today published a guide of travel tips to help hotel guests plan for possible strikes across the United States. Thousands of hotel workers in nine cities have now authorized strikes at Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and Omni hotels, but hotels rarely notify guests of a strike, and travelers sometimes learn of a strike only upon arriving at their hotel and being met by a boisterous picket line. The union launched the travel guide ahead of Labor Day weekend, when millions of Americans are planning travel.

    Over 400 Daly City hospital workers go on strike

    March 26, 2024 // Workers claim the hospital changed union health care benefits at the start of the year, and as a result, workers either pay up to $6,000 to keep access to existing doctors and hospitals or accept the new health plan they claim does not include prenatal or pediatric care. Seton management says it is offering 16% pay increases over three years; free medical benefits for immediate families; and up to 400 hours annually of accrued paid time off.

    Culinary Workers Union picket Valley Hospital, set strike date

    April 26, 2023 // Hundreds lined the sidewalks holding signs and raising their voices with various chants, including 'no contract, no peace.' The union claims it's been seven years since about 90 members who are cooks, cashiers, kitchen workers, stewards, and in housekeeping have received a pay raise. Culinary Union President Diana Valles said the hospital is attempting to bust the union. "This company is the devil," Valles said. "This company is trying to put these workers lower than the standard in Las Vegas, where they can have good union benefits. They want to get rid of those benefits." The union claims the hospital has fired four Culinary Union members who were leaders in their workplaces, including Betty Williams, a committee leader, and 40-year Culinary Union member.
