October 13, 2026 // Union members say they want better health care benefits, pensions, protection for immigrant workers, wages that keep up with inflation and safer workloads. A 2025 survey by the UNITE HERE Local 1 union found 32% of its members lacked money to cover their rent or mortgage and around 29% lacked money to cover utility bills in the last 12 months.
Workers at Obama’s ‘Death Star’ presidential library strike back, vow to unionize over benefit cuts, ‘increasing workloads’
October 8, 2026 // Employees at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago are unionizing over their working conditions, claiming benefits have been cut and workloads are increasing just four months after the center opened in June. Workers circulated a letter to staff Wednesday announcing their intent to unionize, complaining about “increasing” workloads and “vague responses” from administrators to a list of complaints they’d raised, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Some of the complaints suggested the $900 million presidential center — often maligned for resembling the Star Wars Death Star or a huge trash bin — could already be facing financial trouble.
Nurses throughout Jefferson Health System announce plan to unionize
September 9, 2026 // During an event held outside Jefferson Bucks Hospital, in Langhorne, on Tuesday, organizers behind the effort said more than 200 nurses -- including those at the Bucks County hospital as well as from Einstein Center One and Jefferson Health WIllowcrest -- have filed for union elections with the National Labor Relations Board in order to form a union.
George Eastman Museum workers file for union vote
September 2, 2026 // Located at 900 East Ave., once the home of Kodak founder George Eastman, the museum employs nearly 100 people — including projectionists, preservationists, restaurant workers, curators and administrators — and the majority favor unionization, George Eastman Museum Workers United said in a statement.

May 27, 2026 // About 2,100 IT and technical employees across the University of California system voted to join the labor union over concerns about mass layoffs in the tech sector, as well as growing workloads without any added pay.
KU pharmacy techs narrowly lose union election, claim some votes weren’t counted
May 26, 2026 // “Disliking the results of an election objectively administered by an impartial state agency should not lead to baseless claims by the IAM Union intended to misinform employees and the public,” the health system’s written statement said in part. The larger bargaining unit, which includes the health system’s 39th Street main campus, voted 19-20 against unionizing. The unit had 105 eligible voters. Two ballots were voided. The second bargaining unit, including a specialty pharmacy in the Southlake Business Park in Lenexa, voted 9-10 against unionizing. That unit had 43 eligible voters.
Hachette Employees Seek to Unionize
April 28, 2026 // The HWC would be the largest union in trade publisher history, according to the announcement, comprising hundreds of in-person and remote non-management workers. Among the Big Five, it joins the Association of HarperCollins Employees, members of Local 2110 of the UAW, which encompasses 180 staffers.
About 200 South Jersey healthcare workers vote to unionize
March 20, 2026 // Health Professionals and Allied Employees, the state’s top healthcare labor union, said about 160 workers at Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice will unionize after a 95-27 vote. The group — which includes registered nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, and others — said they sought unionization due to unrealistic workloads. In a separate election, registered nurse case managers at Inspira Health voted 22-2 to unionize. The RN case managers, who help set up post-hospital care for patients, are based in Inspira’s medical centers in Vineland, Elmer, and Bridgeton.

Hilton-Americas Houston strike ends as workers secure $20 minimum wage, improved conditions
October 14, 2025 // Unite Here Local 23 members at Hilton-Americas Houston have voted to ratify a new contract, ending a 40-day strike and winning higher wages. Housekeepers, laundry attendants and stewards secured $20-an-hour minimum wage with guaranteed wage increases to eventually bring that number up to $22 an hour by the end of the contract, according to a Oct. 10 news release.
