Strike On Time: Cornell UAW Workers Strike on Student Move-In Day
August 19, 2024 // As students and their families arrive at Cornell for the start of the academic year, the strike threatens to disrupt essential campus operations, including dining services, facilities maintenance, and other critical functions. The decision to strike follows a strike authorization vote that passed with 94% approval from the union's approximately 1,200 members, including custodians, groundskeepers, cooks, food service workers, greenhouse workers, gardeners, and mechanics. The last time UAW workers at Cornell went on strike was 43 years ago in 1981, when the union and the university ratified their first contract.

4 reasons why labor unions love Tim Walz

On Sunday, both sides thought they had a deal and would avoid the strike, but late last night, union members voted the agreement down.

Providence claims nurses union is asking travel nurses to turn down contracts during strike
June 17, 2024 // Hospital leadership is referring to an ONA letter, which calls on "all nurses to stand in solidarity" and to "not accept travel nurse contracts scheduled to start in June or July." Providence announced last week that their facilities would remain open during the strike and that they'd fill those gaps with replacement workers. "The world of replacement nurses, if they feel intimidated or if they're feeling like this isn't a place that they are welcome to come, or safe to come, then it's possible that they wouldn't choose to accept those contracts and that could negatively impact patient care," Gentry said.
Teamsters president seeks speaking slot at both party conventions
June 11, 2024 // Our thought bubble, from Axios' Nathan Bomey: Although the leadership of unions like the Teamsters and the UAW have historically been progressive, many of their members are conservative. Case in point: The UAW has endorsed Biden for reelection but has acknowledged that about a third of its members voted for Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020.

Biden appoints UAW president to White House advisory council
June 3, 2024 // The President’s Export Council serves as the main national committee advising the White House on matters of international trade. The group discusses and works to resolve trade-related issues around business, agriculture and labor. The appointment of Fain is the latest instance of the UAW leader emerging as one of Biden’s closest allies in organized labor. Biden walked the picket line with UAW members in Michigan during a strike last year, and Fain and the group endorsed Biden’s reelection bid in January, citing the president’s solidarity with workers.
