Op-ed: Is anyone in charge of Los Angeles?
August 12, 2025 // LWithin days, the LA Alliance for Tourism, Jobs and Progress — whose $3 million budget comes primarily from Delta Airlines, United Airlines and the American Hotel & Lodging Association — filed paperwork to put a citizen’s-veto referendum before voters in 2026. (Plummer is among the small businesspeople listed as the measure’s official proponents.) It would take 92,000 signatures to reach the ballot, but just filing the referendum had an immediate impact: delaying implementation of the law’s first planned pay increase on July 1, to $22.50 per hour. Frustrated by the possibility that years of lobbying could be wiped away with a corporate-backed campaign, organized labor launched a counteroffensive. In June, Unite Here Local 11 — which represents 32,000 workers across Southern California hotels, airports and sports arenas — filed a package of four ballot initiatives.
United Airlines Flight Attendants Make Big Decision on Contract
August 2, 2025 // 92% of eligible voters cast ballots in this vote, and 71% voted against the proposal sent to them by United. In response to the vote, United says that it will continue to work with the union to create a more mutually beneficial outcome.
Los Angeles tourism industry and labor unions brawl ahead of 2028 Olympics
July 1, 2025 // After the city council passed a $30 minimum wage law in late May for workers in the airline, hotel and hospitality industries, a group of business interests — signed by players in the local hospitality industry and funded by major airlines and industry groups like Delta, United and the American Hotel & Lodging Association — launched a referendum effort to challenge the new law. “We’re giving everything we have to make this business work, to claw out of the hole that was created by COVID,” said Greg Plummer, a referendum proponent who runs a 250-employee concession company at LAX. “Our airports are still down substantially in traffic. Tourism is completely down, and the fires didn’t help … it gets to a point where it’s going to crumble a lot of small businesses.”
United Airlines flight attendants are set for pay rises of up to 45%
June 11, 2025 // The union representing United Airlines flight attendants reached a tentative deal for a new contract. Members would receive pay rises of up to 45.6% over five years. They would also get half-pay during boarding, like crew on some other airlines. United Airlines flight attendants are set for big pay increases under the terms of a tentative agreement.
Businesses seek to overturn hotel and airport wage hikes by forcing a citywide election
May 30, 2025 // Under the city's laws, hotel and airport workers have minimum wages that are higher than those who are employed by other industries. The hotel minimum wage, approved by the council in 2014, is currently $20.32 per hour. The minimum wage for private-sector employees at LAX is $25.23 per hour, which includes a $5.95 hourly healthcare payment. For nearly everyone else in L.A., the hourly minimum wage is $17.28, 78 cents higher than the state’s. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
Over 150 Sea-Tac aircraft fuelers vote ‘overwhelmingly’ to authorize strike
May 7, 2025 // A similarly sized group of aircraft fuelers working for Swissport, many of them immigrants, voted to strike in 2018, but they never made it to that stage before earning a new contract.
United Pilots Remove Union Chairman After Spouse’s Hiring Sparks Leadership Showdown
January 15, 2025 // Meanwhile flight attendants at United removed their negotiators, and American Airlines flight attendants are dealing with charges filed against their President. All of these work groups except United Airlines flight attendants (who remain in negotiations) have seen significant wage increases in recent years. That hasn’t been enough to forestall infighting and accusations of corruption.
American Airlines Union President Faces ‘Embezzlement’ and ‘Cover-Up’ Allegations Amid Mounting Dissent
January 10, 2025 // Formal charges have been filed by one of the American Airlines flight attendant base Presidents against their union President, Julie Hedrick. These “Article VII Charges” allege ‘willful violation’ of the union’s constitution including improper use of union funds for personal enrichment. This includes the allegation of having the union lease her an apartment without first certifying that she lived outside the area (the union can lease apartments for its officers to stay at in Dallas only if their primary residence is elsewhere).
Transportation unions face key dates that could mean strikes in 2025
December 30, 2024 // Flight attendants at United Airlines, dockworkers on East Coast and Gulf Coast ports and locomotive engineers who operate NJ Transit commuter trains are all engaged in negotiations to reach new contacts. The International Longshoreman’s Association, known as the ILA, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen are the closest to potential strike dates in 2025.
Boeing’s labor strike is so bad that the US Labor Secretary just flew to Seattle to help
October 16, 2024 // Analysts at Anderson Economic Group estimated that the first month of Boeing's 33,000-worker strike, which started on September 13, cost the company and workers $5 billion. The last strike, in 2008, shuttered plants for eight weeks and hit revenue by an estimated $100 million per day. In regulatory filings Tuesday, Boeing announced plans to raise up to $35 billion. That includes a $10 billion credit agreement, while it may also sell up to $25 billion of securities.
